The Novella Is Out As Of September 2
Earlier this summer, Roberts and Simon & Schuster announced on Instagram that readers could visit the kingdom of Ilya again in a new addition to the Powerless universe: a new novella called Fearful. Fearful is officially out, meaning the series is already making a thrilling comeback, just five months after its official conclusion.
Those disappointed in Kitt’s journey in Fearless will be happy to learn that Fearful will give us more time with the character, as he’s the focal point of Roberts’ newest addition to her romantasy story. The novella will also center a character named Mara, who takes a special interest in Kitt.
Fearful isn’t the first Powerless novella that Roberts has written; she also penned Adena’s story in Powerful, which is set during the events of the first book. She has a knack for digging deeper into her supporting casts, even after their tragic deaths. And it sounds like Kitt’s new narrative will complement his story in Fearless well.

Fearful will take place during the events of Fearless, meaning Kitt is still alive during the novella — though it seems death is already lurking nearby. Fearless briefly introduces Mara, who we’ll get more acquainted with in the novella, and she’s seemingly the physical form of death.
Mara will attempt to get to know Kitt in Fearful, which, according to USA Today, will also explore Kitt’s complicated feelings about mortality. His fear of death gives the novella its name, and it sets readers up for yet another emotional story.
Roberts has confirmed that the novella will be the last puzzle piece in The Fearless Trilogy, though she has suggested she could return to this world for spinoffs. Tying up the loose ends around Kitt’s death feels like the right way to wrap things up, even if this last addition to the romantasy story is destined to break our hearts.
