The Property Brothers Just Made the Hardest Thing in Home Design Look Ridiculously Easy

HGTV is a Mecca for home design aficionados. With wall-to-wall coverage, the incredible stars of the network not only bring free interior design inspiration to the masses, they also present incredible tips, tricks, and hacks that can make your lives easier. For Jonathan and Drew Scott, their empire has grown over the years, partially thanks to their ability to help at-home designers continually. But a recent hack they shared on their official YouTube has officially blown all of our minds.

The thing about HGTV is that not every design idea is practical for its viewers. As much as one might dream of a scullery, the practicality and real estate of installing one is truly for the select few. But this tip that the twins have is for literally everybody. Ladies and gentlemen, and everybody in between, it’s officially time to learn how to properly hang a picture like a pro.

Whether you tune into Celebrity IOU, the original Property Brothers, or any of their various series, Jonathan and Drew’s influence has made a great impact on the network. And thus, HGTV continues to clamor for more! But as their brains stew on their next show angle, their YouTube is the perfect place to learn things you should have learned decades ago. As Drew points out, “When you can walk into a room and see that something’s not symmetrical or something isn’t centered, it drives me insane!” Same here. According to the Property Brothers, there are three great ways to hang a picture.

The Property Brothers Teach the Best Hacks for Photo Hanging

Option one: Command strips. After realizing that the photo they had framed just happened to be upside down, they revealed that this option could salvage the mistake. The simple and safe solution is incredibly handy. The version they selected is the double Velcro version, but there is an assortment of options that will work for the specific frame you are hanging. The beauty here is having the ability to pull the tab and save the wall when you’re ready to remove it. Jonathan does give a public service announcement that you cannot, under any circumstances, rip the strip off. “That is what the tab is for!” he exclaimed. He also revealed that with thicker frames, insert the Velcro so you cannot see the strips. Jonathan and Drew used a level to help ensure the frame was placed properly.

Option two: hammer and nails. Probably the most common method used before the invention of the Command strips, this works when your frame has spots for nails to serve as hooks. Drew displayed a hack that included painter’s tape on the back of the frame to mark where you want to center the picture on the wall. However, they did show that other tools can achieve this as well. Then, he showed how you put it on the wall, this time using a laser level, upon which you can hammer in the nails. His big tip here is to hammer it in at a slight angle. From there, simply place the frame on the nails, and you’re done! If the frame isn’t perfectly level, simply angle the nail down. Additionally, you can ball up a piece of painter’s tape and place it on the nail to add a tiny bit of space.

Option three: anchor. If you have wallpaper or a fabric wall, this is the method for you. Because it’s not a smooth surface, the previous methods are not optimal. By using a stud finder, you can pick the perfect place on the wall to place your frame. They recommend this method if you have kids who may bump into the picture or live in a potential earthquake zone.

The Property Brothers Are Here to Help

Jonathan and Drew’s “Ask a Brother” series on their official YouTube channel is an excellent extension of their vast collection of shows. While the episodes on HGTV tend to center closely around entertainment, it’s these short videos, often focusing on what we might perceive as obvious, that don’t always make the cut. Surely, during their shows, we see them hang frames during the finishing touches, but spending those extra minutes teaching you how to do so doesn’t quite work on the network. That’s why having a giant multimedia empire is major for these HGTV stars.

They have had an assortment of tip-based videos on their channel that have become go-to viewing. They’re even in a handy dandy playlist! Some recent snippets have included upgrades for backyard entertaining, when you should save or splurge, and how to live large in small spaces. Their accessibility, should you have a burning question, is only a click away. If you’re hesitant about reaching out, consider checking their website for additional helpful tips!
