The Red Ranger's New T-Rex Sword Is the Coolest Weapon in Power Rangers History

The newest iteration of Power Rangers is set to introduce the coolest weapon in franchise history. Previously, BOOM! Studios announced that after its Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ongoing ended, a brand-new ongoing series will take its place called Power Rangers Prime. The cover art for the first issue features a new design for the classic Red Ranger, this time sporting a sword on their forearm.

Artist Dan Mora posted a better look at this mysterious Red Ranger on Instagram, showcasing his cover art for Melissa Flores and Michael Yg’s Power Rangers Prime #1, currently scheduled for a November 13th release. Mora’s aforementioned post can be found below.

The undressed cover art offers readers a better look at this Red Ranger’s new sword. This glimpse gives audiences a chance to speculate about what this Ranger could be capable of and how their weaponry and powers compare to those of Rangers past.

Power Rangers IS BACK and better than ever! Prepare yourself for PRIME: a bold new era featuring a brand-new cast of characters, excitement, and attitude! In the vein of Marvel’s The Ultimates, get ready to experience a new team, a new mentor, and a threat to Earth unlike anything you’ve seen before. Angel Grove University students face a difficult choice after crossing paths with a fugitive straight out of legend. The consequences for hiding her are dire… but her existence may not stay a secret for long. Groundbreaking Power Rangers writer Melissa Flores ushers the iconic Rangers Mythos into the next era of adventure, joined by acclaimed artist Michael Yg (IRON FIST) to craft an unmissable experience perfect for new readers and longtime fans alike!

Plot-wise, not much is known about Power Rangers Prime other than that it is going to signal a new era for the franchise. The most that readers can speculate so far is from preview images and cover art like this. Mora’s cover showcases a modern – maybe futuristic – revamp of the Mighty Morphin team’s Red Ranger. The costume seems to sport armor throughout its body, most notably on the elaborately designed shoulder blades and the arms. Speaking of blades, the forearm blade is the most notable aspect of this suit.

There is a chance that this new Red Ranger is an entirely new character.

One has to think that the sword has to be a retractable one within the Tyrannosaurus Rex gauntlet, which alone makes for a cool design. Not to mention, it has to be efficient during hand-to-hand combat, meaning that if a fight gets deadly, this Red Ranger could unleash their sword at a moment’s notice, instantly making it one of the most practical – if not strongest – Power Rangers weapons. Also interesting is that this Ranger seems to be emanating some sort of powerful essence on their other hand, suggesting more than just weaponry as a power source.

Who Could This New Red Ranger Be?

Potentially Lauren Shiba in a New Costume

Lauren Shiba of Samurai gets chased in Power Rangers Prime #1-5

One of the few things inferred from this design is that, based on the character’s body design, this Red Ranger appears to be a woman. There is a chance that this new Red Ranger is an entirely new character, perhaps one of the Angel Grove University students graduating into a teenager with attitude. Alternatively, past solicits and previews have already confirmed the return of Lauren Shiba, the Red Ranger of Power Ranger Samurai, who notoriously has a penchant for using swords. Shiba’s return and integration into a new Power Rangers team could give her a new costume.

Power Rangers Prime #1 is available November 13th, 2024 from BOOM! Studios.
