The Upcoming Dragon Show Poised To Save Fantasy TV

Prime Video’s catalog of fantasy TV shows keeps expanding, and one upcoming dragon show based on a best-selling novel will save the fantasy genre. Like most of its competitors, Prime Video has both licensed and original content, with some of its titles from the latter category now ranking among the best TV shows of all time.

Prime Video has mostly stood out for its fantasy TV shows, with some big hits like The Wheel of Time and Rings of Power, and other underrated but equally great fantasy shows, such as Good Omens and The Legend of Vox Machina. Prime Video has more fantasy shows lined up, including an adaptation of a novel series with great potential to save fantasy TV.

Fantasy romance novels have gone through a successful streak in recent years, and as happens with popular and successful books, some of them have scored deals to be adapted either to film or TV. Among those getting a TV show adaptation is Fourth Wing, a new adult fantasy romance novel by Rebecca Yarros.

Fourth Wing is the first entry in Yarros’ Empyrean series, and it follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, the youngest daughter of General Lilith Sorrengail, leader of the Basgiath War College. Violet has been trained to be a scribe like her father, but Lilith forces her to join the Riders Quadrant, despite Violet also having some physical limitations.

Violet must go through deadly quests and competitions to become a dragon rider, while also trying not to be killed by Xaden Riorson, one of the most powerful riders in the quadrant. Fourth Wing was published in 2023 and was hugely successful, going viral on social media among reader communities.

In 2023, it was reported that Amazon was developing a TV adaptation of Fourth Wing, initially with Moira Walley-Beckett as showrunner, and later with Meredith Averill taking on this role. Michael B. Jordan is among the show’s producers, through his production company Outlier Society Productions, and at the time of writing, Fourth Wing doesn’t have a projected release date.

It has been two years since Fourth Wing’s TV adaptation was announced, and there hasn’t been much development since then, with Michael B. Jordan offering an update in January 2026, reassuring fans that the show is still happening. Fantasy fans are understandably worried about the future of Fourth Wing’s TV adaptation, as other new and young adult adaptations have struggled.

Most recently, the TV adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses has gone through some challenges and delays in its development. An ACOTAR TV adaptation was officially announced in 2021, with Hulu in charge. Since then, the project has been surrounded by rumors and misinformation, as well as a lack of updates.

Despite reports affirming that the ACOTAR TV show was no longer happening, Variety debunked those rumors, revealing that the project is still in development at Hulu.

The biggest challenge the TV adaptation of Fourth Wing is facing is that the novel is so popular that there are high expectations for it. Fourth Wing must find the right balance between action, fantasy, and romance, as these are the basis of the story, without forgetting its elements of political intrigue.

Of course, Fourth Wing needs to get the visual aspects right, with high-quality special effects to bring this fantasy world, its dragons, places, battles, and more to life in the most believable way. Fourth Wing has a lot of challenges to overcome in order to succeed, and if it overcomes them, it can save fantasy TV and make things easier for other new and young adult adaptations.
