Carrie Coon is the queen of HBO at this point. Not only has she gone from The Leftovers to playing our Bertha Russell in The Gilded Age, but she also jumped ship and headed to Thailand for Season 3 of The White Lotus. It’s been a great time for fans of Coon on HBO because The White Lotus ended earlier this year, and we only had to wait a few months before The Gilded Age returned for Season 3. The turnaround was so fast that Coon had literally 48 hours to leave Laurie and her friends behind before jumping back into 1800s for Bertha.
Talking with PEOPLE, Coon shared that she only had 48 hours between the two. “I went from the one set to the other in 48 hours,” Coon she told the outlet. She even went on to say that her kids weren’t sympathetic to her jet lag either. “I have two children, and they didn’t care that I had, you know, jet lag or that I needed to rest or work.” But she went on to say that production worked with her being out of town and allowed her to film bedroom scenes first so that she was in night gowns since she was jet lagged and also could not have costume fittings when she was filming The White Lotus.
“So I was woefully underprepared, and I had no costumes ’cause I’d been out of the country for six months essentially,” she said. “What was lovely is they decided to just shoot all my bedroom scenes [first]. So I got to be in all my nightgowns and robes for the first few days. So they really eased me into it.” She went on to say, “I really just begged them for more time because it’s TV, it moves very quickly, and I just needed more time to figure out how to talk, just how to walk around [as Bertha].” But Coon said even if she struggled to get back into everything, her family was very patient with her. “I just felt like a stranger in my own family, is how I felt, but they were very patient with me and just quite lovely.”
Carrie Coon Has to Stay Out of the Sun on The White Lotus
During the press for The White Lotus, Coon talked with Today about filming the series and how she had to stay out of the sun because she was going to film Season 3 right after she wrapped in Thailand. “My skin was supposed to look like porcelain. I mean, they eat arsenic biscuits,” she said, talking about playing Bertha after playing Laurie on The White Lotus. But she also told Today that she did get to swim. Just not as people would like. Coon shared that she “hid in my room from 9 to 4” and then “would swim in long sleeves and long pants at 5 p.m. when the UV index dropped to 1.”
You can see Coon in Season 3 of The Gilded Age.
