Thomas Haden Church responds to questions about whether his Twisted Metal character could potentially return in season 2. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Church’s Agent Stone served as the primary antagonist throughout season 1 of the hit Peacock show. Despite the Twisted Metal season 1 finale hinting at his character’s death by suicide, the resulting gunshot is only heard by audiences and his death is never shown onscreen.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Church revealed that he has already spoken with showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith about his potential season 2 return, and his character’s apparent death was originally filmed in multiple ways. While he remained non-committal about a season 2 appearance, he said that he would not be surprised if fan reactions to his character led to his eventual return. Check out his comments below:
Michael and I talked about that. Michael Jonathan Smith, the showrunner. And when we were setting that up, that scene where I get the hatchet to the face, and then she gives me the pistol. I asked him, I go, ‘Are we gonna see this?’ And he goes, ‘I don’t know.’ And so we shot it, we shot it all different ways where you do see me put the pistol near my head and pull the trigger, and then they shot it where you just hear it. Who knows?
I mean, the character was apparently very popular. You know, with a fan reaction. The show got a huge audience. But apparently, a lot of the feedback was that people really liked Agent Stone. So I wouldn’t be surprised. And that’s a tough look to get, you know, because that hair…
Agent Stone’s Return Could Overshadow Season 2’s Other Villains
Characterized by his single-minded and uncompromising approach to imposing justice on the post-apocalyptic world of Twisted Metal, Church’s Agent Stone quickly proved himself a standout character in a show filled with memorable personalities. While his tireless pursuit of Anthony Mackie’s John Doe and Stephanie Beatriz’s Quiet underpinned much of season 1’s story, from a narrative perspective, his death was necessary to make way for a collection of even more formidable foes in Twisted Metal season 2.

10 Questions Twisted Metal Season 2 Needs To Answer
With the renewal of Twisted Metal, season 2 must ensure they answer questions about the season 1 characters and video game connections.
With the Twisted Metal season 1 finale showing Raven (Neve Campbell) revealing her true intentions for John, Stone needed to die in order to allow Campbell’s character to step into a more central role. Moreover, with other characters like the mysterious Calyspo and the driver Axel also confirmed for season 2, the idea of having Church’s character return from the dead would likely overshadow plans for their own respective introductions.
Of course, that does not necessarily discount Agent Stone’s potential return altogether, and seasoned television audiences are all too aware that a character is never really dead until they see the body. However, if Smith, in his capacity as the Twisted Metal showrunner, really does decide to bring Church back, it may be better to do it at a much later point in the series. With any luck, the show’s continued success could even see it move into a possible season 3 and beyond.
