Tyler Perry's Where There's Smoke - Netflix

If you’re a fan of shows like Chicago Fire, 9-11, and Fire Country, you will really like the latest news from Netflix about a brand-new show headed to our watch lists. Firefighters have been missing from our watch lists on the streaming service, but Tyler Perry will help fill that void.

Netflix announced the new series Tyler Perry’s Where There’s Smoke, a firefighter drama that’s produced, written, and directed by Perry under his multi-year first-look deal with the streaming service. The upcoming series contains 16 episodes and has already started filming in Atlanta, Georgia, as seen in the sneak peek image Netflix released from set.

Where There’s Smoke centers on a firehouse full of surely big personalities as the firefighters work together to save lives, all while navigating the grueling nature of their jobs. In addition to following them on life-or-death emergency calls, the series also tracks the equally fiery personal lives of the team, which surely includes romances and their relationships with each other.

Here’s how Netflix describes the series in the official synopsis shared in the press release: “Tyler Perry’s Where There’s Smoke follows the lives of a group of firefighters as they navigate the intense challenges of their high-stakes profession while grappling with personal struggles, fractured relationships, and the emotional toll of saving lives in a world filled with danger, drama, and heartbreak.”

The exciting part of the show getting announced when filming has kicked off is that we already know who’s starring the series. Netflix shared the full main cast:

  • Tyler Lepley as Owen
  • Mike Merrill as Cameron
  • Da’Vinchi as Noah
  • Eltony Williams as Jermaine
  • Brock O’Hurn as Ethan
  • Joe Hunter as Chief Bailey
  • Karen Obilom as Laura
  • Brittany S. Hall as Angela
  • Mariah Goodie as Rhonda
  • Jordan Rodriguez as Brent
  • Judi Moon as Darcy

We don’t know just yet what the dynamics will be between these characters. Who will be enemies, who will be friends, who will be lovers, and who might even be related are all answers still to come when Tyler Perry’s Where There’s Smoke makes its premiere on Netflix. The streamer didn’t confirm a release window for the series but offered that it’s “coming soon.”

Given how quickly Perry productions tend to film and the rather rapid turnaround thereafter, it’s possible that the series could make its debut before the end of the year. However, don’t expect a premiere much before fall 2026 if the show does manage to drop this year. The 16-episode order suggests that the first season will be split into two eight-episode parts, just like Perry’s hit Netflix original drama Beauty in Black, which returns for season 2 part 2 on March 19.

Where There’s Smoke marks Netflix’s first major foray into original scripted firefighter drama series, which is a subgenre of procedurals that has gained more and more popularity in the past decade. Netflix has has limited success wading into more traditional small-screen storytelling, and there’s no doubt that the firefighter drama will be another blockbuster in its collaboration with Tyler Perry.
