2026 is set to open an exciting new chapter for Tomb Raider fans, as the long-awaited sequel to Underworld has finally been announced. While the full adventure is still months away, fans have already been treated to a tantalizing first look at what’s to come, hinting at one of Lara Croft’s most thrilling adventures yet.
Gamers will recall that Tomb Raider: Underworld (2008) marked the final entry in the “Legend–Anniversary–Underworld” trilogy developed by Crystal Dynamics. Following its release, however, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics chose to reboot the franchise rather than continue that timeline. This decision led to the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, which reimagined Lara Croft’s origin story and launched the Survivor Trilogy.
Now, fans are finally getting a continuation of the Underworld storyline, as Dark Horse Comics, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, has announced a new comic mini-series, Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts, with its first issue set to hit shelves on January 14, 2026.
Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts Promises a Thrilling Return for Lara Croft
Dark Horse’s Four-Issue Miniseries Offers Fans a New Adventure and Perfect Entry Point for New Readers
Dark Horse Comics’ official announcement describes the series as “a thrilling adventure for the puzzle-solving archaeologist turned legend following the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld.” For fans of the Legend–Anniversary–Underworld trilogy, this is a can’t-miss continuation of the story. However, the narrative has also been designed to work as a standalone entry for newcomers to Lara Croft’s adventures.
This four-issue miniseries serves both as a new chapter for longtime Tomb Raider fans and an ideal jumping-on point for first-time readers. Writer Casey Gilly (My Little Pony, Buffy: The Last Vampire Slayer), artist Antonio Di Caprio (Samuel Stern, KAYLA), colorist Eren Angiolini (Critical Role: Tales of Exandria–Artagan, DC Pride 2025), and letterer AndWorld Design (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Canto) lead the project.
Dark Horse promises this A-list creative team is bringing “Croft back to comics in a big way.” Fans can preview Taurin Clarke’s main cover for Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts #1, along with a sneak peek of the issue itself above. The first chapter officially launches this winter, setting the stage for an exciting new era in Lara Croft’s comic book legacy.
Croft Manor in Flames: Lara Croft Faces a Life-Changing Adventure
A Mysterious Foe and Legendary Relics Launch Lara on a High-Stakes Cross-Continental Quest
The official synopsis teases a dramatic shake-up for Lara Croft, revealing that Croft Manor (her ancestral home and family estate that often serves as her base of operations) has gone up in flames. This disaster forces Lara to reflect on her life and determine what truly matters to her, setting the stage for a story with high personal stakes.
The synopsis continues: “But a confrontation with a mysterious foe who has obtained a dangerous and familiar artifact launches Lara into a cross-continental journey, doing what she does best: raiding tombs and seeking legendary relics.” This promises a thrilling, action-packed chapter that will redefine the status quo for the Tomb Raider franchise.
