January 14, 2025, will be an epic day for Tomb Raider fans, as they’re finally getting a much-needed and long-awaited sequel to Underworld, pushing the Tomb Raider timeline forward for the first time in 17 years. The announcement marks a historic return for Lara Croft, reigniting excitement for the franchise’s future.
Tomb Raider: Underworld was the franchise’s messiest game in the sense that it brimmed with ambition, lore, and technical complexity far ahead of its time, leaving it open to criticism for trying to do everything at once (i.e., emotional, narrative, and technical complexity) without fully succeeding.
Yet even where it fell short, the game remains a fan favorite, with many agreeing it set the bar for Lara Croft’s future adventures. Now, Dark Horse Comics, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, is continuing this iconic and dearly missed Underworld storyline in a brand-new comic mini-series, Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts.
Tomb Raider: Underworld’s Story Finally Continues After 17 Years (Here’s Everything We Know)
Dark Horse Assembles a Dream Team to Revive Lara Croft’s Most Iconic Era
Dark Horse Comics officially announced that Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts will be a four-issue mini-series led by writer Casey Gilly (My Little Pony, Buffy: The Last Vampire Slayer), artist Antonio Di Caprio (Samuel Stern, KAYLA), colorist Eren Angiolini (Critical Role: Tales of Exandria – Artagan, DC Pride 2025), and letterer AndWorld Design (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Canto).
According to the publisher, Sacred Artifacts will be “a thrilling adventure for the puzzle-solving archaeologist turned legend following the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld.” For fans of the Legend-Anniversary-Underworld trilogy, this will be a can’t-miss continuation of Lara Croft’s story.
When Croft Manor goes up in flames, it forces Lara to take stock of her life and figure out what is important to her. But a confrontation with a mysterious foe who has gotten their hands on a dangerous and familiar artifact launches Lara into a cross-continental journey, doing what she does best: raiding tombs and questing for legendary relics.
The series promises to bring “Croft back to comics in a big way,” with the first issue hitting shelves on January 14, 2025. Readers can preview Taurin Clarke’s main cover for Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts #1 above, along with a sneak peek of the issue below. While it remains to be seen what Dark Horse will keep canon and what will change, one thing is certain: an exciting new era in Lara Croft’s comic legacy is about to begin.
Why Fans Have Been Waiting Years for Tomb Raider: Underworld’s True Continuation
Sacred Artifacts Promises to Expand Lore & Possibly Rewrite Canon
One area where Tomb Raider: Underworld disappointed fans, despite being a favorite, was its short length. Many felt the DLCs had been cut directly from the main game, and thus didn’t feel like true DLC. For that reason, Dynamite Comics and Crystal Dynamics returning to the Underworld storyline is something many agree was long overdue.
It will be exciting to see how Sacred Artifacts expands the lore and narrative of the Legend–Anniversary–Underworld trilogy. Fans also anticipate changes to Underworld canon, given how different Lara’s story became in the Survivor trilogy. As a result, excitement and anticipation are high for this long-awaited Tomb Raider sequel.
Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts #1 (of 4) is available on January 14, 2026, from Dark Horse Comics!
