Viral YouTube Comedy Group's Documentary To Release In Theaters

A documentary about the YouTube group Dude Perfect is now set to release in theaters. Dude Perfect is a Texas-based comedy group consisting of members Tyler Toney, Coby Cotton, Cory Cotton, Garrett Hilbert, and Cody Jones. The group met as college roommates at Texas A&M and now makes comedy videos depicting trick shots, stunts, and more.

Dude Perfect was founded and started their YouTube channel in 2009. Their very first video, Backyard Edition, went viral and helped elevate the group’s fame. Now, they run a YouTube channel with over 61 million subscribers whose videos consistently get millions of views.

Per Bloomberg, a documentary titled Dude Perfect: The Hero Tour is officially set for release in theaters. The film will chronicle the YouTube group’s nationwide performances. The theater chain Regal will release the movie onto 800 screens throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and parts of Western Europe.

This will start out as a two-week release that could eventually expand. According to the source, Regal is “hoping Dude Perfect can be the next Taylor Swift.”

The Taylor Swift aspirations are in reference to the 2023 concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. This movie was released by AMC, and saw massive gains for the theater chain. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour became the highest-grossing concert movie of all time, making $261.6 million worldwide.

The Dude Perfect movie is an effort on Regal’s part to expand their programming. Reports have shown that movie ticket sales are down 25%, forcing theaters to find new ways to engage audiences. For Dude Perfect: The Hero Tour, Regal has also aligned its own distribution team who will release the project to exhibitors including AMC Entertainment and Cinemark.

This represents Regal’s attempt to work their way into a similar space occupied by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. The Dude Perfect movie is also a documentary, and while not a concert film, it will chronicle the group’s tour of the country. If it goes well, it could rival its predecessor’s success.

Regal’s move is emblematic of the increased integration of YouTubers’ content into other forms of media. Mr. Beast recently made a similar crossover with the Prime Video series Beast Games, which was hosted by the YouTube star.

The reception of Dude Perfect: The Hero Tour in theaters will help determine how viable YouTube-related content is for theatrical releases. The movie will draw a different audience base than something like Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, but the power of this subscriber base should not be underestimated, as people may indeed turn up for this performance documentary.
