From Chicago to New Jersey to the White House – is there anywhere the tiny killer known as Chucky won’t go? In the over-three decades since the first Child’s Play film came out, the iconic horror character has shown up in a slew of different places and circumstances, with franchise creator, Don Mancini, continuing to one-up himself every step of the way. Just one year ago, Mancini toyed with the idea of launching the doll into space, and now, Chucky series star, Devon Sawa, revealed that the character almost took to the high seas.
During a conversation with The Direct, the Heart Eyes actor said,
“I remember [Mancini] had one idea of doing Chucky on a cruise ship that didn‘t go, and I was supposed to play the captain and die by sharks and like… That would have been great. It would have been amazing.”
Death by sharks would have been a death fit for Sawa, who has arguably suffered the wildest and most entertaining kills during the span of the franchise. The Final Destination alum first joined the Chucky universe for the first season of the off-shoot series and, over its three-season run, he appeared as five characters total – each of whom suffered horrific and gory deaths. The idea of throwing Chucky into a Doctor Odyssey-like setting is something that we now feel completely robbed of. Give us the Chucky cruise, cowards!
The Future of Chucky
A collective heartbreak was felt by the Child’s Play fandom last fall when Syfy and USA Network officially pulled the plug on the Chucky series. In the months between the Season 3 finale and the cancellation news, rumors were flying about what the next season might look like. While we may never have all the answers, Sawa says that he was fully in the know, explaining,
“I know exactly what it would look like. I heard the pitch, and I heard a detailed pitch of what it was. But I can’t say anything because I don’t know if [Don Mancini] is going to [do it].”
Regardless of whether we see what the heck happens to Jake (Zackary Arthur), Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), and Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson) after being turned into dolls, Sawa is certain that – one way or another – Chucky will rise again. After all, he always comes back.
“Here’s the thing with Chucky. Chucky is going to live on. He’s been around since 89. Will I go back to be in Chucky? I don’t know, maybe, maybe not. But that could be, you know, Don could turn that idea into a movie. And 10 years, five years, two years… I don’t know, but I can’t give [anything away]… It’s an amazing, amazing idea… But, you know Don’s got a twisted mind, and you’ll see Chucky again, and I hope that he kind of figures a way to get his particular story, that story that I heard, up and going.”
All three seasons of Chucky are now streaming on Peacock.
