Disney+ Subscribers Can Try for a Chance to Attend the 'Deadpool & Wolverine' Premiere

Are those chimichangas ready yet? They better be, because the release of Deadpool & Wolverine is right around the corner. The Marvel Cinematic Universe and the 20th Century X-Men universe are finally colliding in spectacular fashion, with the MCU’s first R-rated feature film becoming the most anticipated movie of the summer. More importantly, it’s the first time that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) will be sharing the big screen (at least, for an R-rated movie, that is).

The twisty and turny timeline of the X-Men saga begins all the way back with the original 2000 film, which sparked one of the longest-running superhero film franchises to ever exist. With an astounding total of thirteen films in this ongoing journey, Deadpool & Wolverine will no doubt be referencing (and making fun of) almost all of it. While watching every movie from X-Men 2000 to Dark Phoenix might be the most optimal way to experience this groundbreaking multiversal event, that’s still quite a long list of movies to cover. To make things a little bit easier, we’ve picked just a handful of the essential movies that you should watch before heading to the theater for Deadpool & Wolverine, as well as the movies that you’ll likely want to stream afterward. However, be warned of spoilers at the end of the article.

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’

(2009)

Release Date:

May 1, 2009

Run Time:

1 hour 47 minutes

Director:

Gavin Hood

Starring:

Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Will.i.am, Lynn Collins, Kevin Durand, Dominic Monaghan, Taylor Kitsch, and Daniel Henney

Alright…let’s get this one out of the way. During one of the darkest periods of the X-Men IP, we were graced with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was intended to kickstart a new spin-off series set in the X-Men universe. While this was the first standalone Wolverine film to star Hugh Jackman, it also became one of the most notorious entries in Marvel’s entire catalog of films (particularly for how the film utilizes Deadpool).

Set several years before the events of the original X-Men film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine explores the early lives of James Logan Howlett and his brother, Victor Creed, AKA Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber). It essentially rehashes all the Weapon X information that we already knew from X2: X-Men United, making the whole movie feel a bit redundant. By far the biggest sin the movie commits is turning the famously mouthy Deadpool and sowing his mouth shut, which later films would constantly mock and make fun of.

Still, X-Men Origins: Wolverine isn’t all bad, particularly when it comes to its performances. Hugh Jackman is great as always, Liev Schreiber gives the best performance in the whole film, and the few times Deadpool does talk are exactly what fans want to hear from the character. Do you need to watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Yes, but not because it has essential plot info, but because Deadpool & Wolverine is going to relentlessly make fun of it.

‘Deadpool’

(2016)

Release Date:

February 12, 2016

Run Time:

1 hour 48 minutes

Director:

Tim Miller

Starring:

Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein, Karan Soni, Leslie Uggams, Stefan Kapicic, and Brianna Hildebrand

Even after the disappointment of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds wanted to be Deadpool again as much as everyone else. We finally got that wish granted in 2016 with the simply titled Deadpool. Gone is the bizarre monster from the previous film. Now, Deadpool is the red tights-wearing, curse-slinging, trigger-happy, fourth-wall-breaking anti-hero that we know and love. It’s clear the film made a big impact, as the original Deadpool went on to become one of the most if not the most successful R-rated films of all time.

The story begins with Wade Wilson – a sarcastic, profane mercenary with a heart of gold. Wade’s life changes dramatically when he meets a woman named Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), whom he falls head over heels in love with. However, things take a turn when Wade is diagnosed with late-stage cancer. Desperate for an answer, Wade enrolls in a program led by a sadistic mutant named Ajax (Ed Skrein). Ajax gives Wade a rapid healing factor but does so by relentlessly torturing and permanently disfiguring him.

Wade is so self-conscious about his new appearance that he can’t face Vanessa, so he vows to track down Ajax so he can reverse the damage. Now the masked mercenary Deadpool (who can also speak to the audience by breaking the fourth wall), Wade is at odds with the X-Men known as Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand). However, not even that will stop Wade from getting his revenge.

‘Logan’

(2017)

Release Date:

March 3, 2017

Run Time:

2 hours 17 minutes

Director:

James Mangold

Starring:

Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Steven Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Richard E. Grant

Hugh Jackman’s final venture as Wolverine (until now) is also one of his absolute best. In fact, we have no problem calling Logan one of the best superhero movies ever made. It’s a violent, bittersweet, and hugely emotional farewell to one of the genre’s all-time best characters and portrayals. While the perfect ending is undermined a tiny bit by Wolverine & Deadpool‘s existence, Logan is still a stellar entry.

Set in the year 2029, the world’s mutants have been all but wiped out. The remaining few include an aging and dying Logan Howlett and a mentally struggling Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). Logan is counting the days before he and Charles expire until an unexpected turn of events takes place when they meet a young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen).

Logan soon learns that Laura is no ordinary little girl. In actuality, she is the technical daughter of Logan since she is a clone made from his very own DNA. She’s escaped a violent band of mutant-hating mercenaries called the Reavers, and Logan is the only one who can help her find safety. Though he vowed to leave his years as a superhero behind him, Logan reluctantly agrees to help Laura for one last adventure.

Logan is currently available to stream on Disney+.

‘Deadpool 2’

(2018)

Release Date:

May 18, 2018

Run Time:

1 hour 59 minutes

Director:

David Leitch

Starring:

Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Brianna Hildebrand

Finally, there’s Deadpool 2, which leads directly into Deadpool & Wolverine. Where Wade describes the first film as a love story, Deadpool 2 is a family story. And as with most family stories, Deadpool 2 begins with a brutal, unexpected, and heartbreaking death.

Since the events of the original film, Deadpool has become a notorious assassin for hire, with most of his targets being the true scum of humanity. This lifestyle comes back to haunt him, as his beloved Vanessa is shockingly killed after a job goes wrong. This throws Wade into a serious depression, and it takes his best frenemy, Colossus to snap him out of it.

Deadpool’s antics get him thrown in prison, where he becomes an unlikely father figure to a troubled young mutant named Russell (Julian Dennison). Despite Wade’s personal struggles, he steps in when Russell is targeted by Cabel (Josh Brolin) – a homicidal super soldier from the future. Deadpool decides to take on the dreaded super soldier, but not before forming a new super team by the name of X-Force.

Deadpool 2 is available to stream on Disney+.
