The White Collar reboot still doesn’t have an official release date, but fans can watch the drama’s biggest star on a totally different type of show, although one that’s equally as delightful. Although White Collar had a near-perfect ending, with Neal successfully faking his death and moving to Europe, a reboot, tentatively titled White Collar Renaissance, has been in the works for some years now.
Unfortunately, the White Collar reboot has yet to find a home, meaning fans will have to wait for a bit before seeing their favorite characters reunite. Luckily, Matt Bomer has a new TV show that shows off his range. While the style and premise are wildly unlike White Collar, the actor is so captivating, it’s worth watching.
Mid-Century Modern Showcases Matt Bomer In A New Light
Since his time on White Collar, lead actor Matt Bomer has taken his talents to Hulu to star in Mid-Century Modern. The original multi-cam sitcom comes from the creators of Will & Grace, and the vibes are similar. Both Mid-Century Modern and Will & Grace feature LGBTQ+ characters and explore handling new roommate situations.
The premise of Mid-Century Modern is distinct from White Collar, as is Bomer’s character, Jerry Frank. While Neal Caffrey was suave, charismatic, and highly intelligent, Jerry is, well, the opposite. A flight attendant dealing with the separation from his family after coming out, Jerry is sweet but ditzy.
Mid-Century Modern can accurately be described as a Golden Girls replacement show, as it’s an ensemble comedy following eccentric older characters. Bomer’s Jerry is definitely the Rose Nylund of the group: innocent and naive, but with their heart always in the right place. Jerry and Neal may be opposites, but they’re both captivating to watch.
Matt Bomer Steals The Show No Matter The Genre
Although it may be hard for White Collar fans to imagine Bomer in such a wildly different role, he completely pulls it off. Perhaps it helps that it’s been over a decade since Bomer and Tim DeKay played a crime-fighting duo, but the person playing Jerry feels totally different from the person who played Neal.
While White Collar had a laugh or two here or there, Mid-Century Modern has allowed Bomer to show off his comedic acting chops. For fans missing the Emmy-nominated actor on their TV screens, this Hulu original is a great way to get their Bomer fix without burning themselves out before the White Collar reboot. Mid-Century Modern shows Bomer cannot be typecast. No matter what the role is, he’ll shine.
