Iain Armitage on the set of Young Sheldon season 1

A newly-released Young Sheldon season 1 throwback image highlights just how Iain Armitage’s Sheldon Cooper has grown in The Big Bang Theory prequel.

A Young Sheldon season 1 behind-the-scenes image emphasizes how much Sheldon Cooper has grown in The Big Bang Theory spin-off over the last six years. After a successful decade on the air, CBS greenlit the first The Big Bang Theory offshoot in an effort to capitalize on the sitcom’s popularity. Being its unofficial lead, the network decided to center the prequel on Sheldon, with the show serving as the character’s origin story.

Iain Armitage, who plays the titular character, shares a Young Sheldon season 1 throwback image showing how much he, as Sheldon Cooper, has grown. Check out the image below:

As Armitage writes in the caption, this was taken before his very first take as the character, where the character was still in high school. In Young Sheldon season 6, Sheldon is already in college at East Texas Tech, although despite his intellect, things haven’t been great with his experience as part of the academic organization lately.

What’s Sheldon’s Growth Spurt Means For Young Sheldon

Sheldon looking concerned in the Young Sheldon season 6 fall finale

Now in season 6, Sheldon and his family have gone through a lot in the last few years. In Young Sheldon‘s storytelling, however, only 3-4 years have passed. As such, a 14-year-old Armitage is now playing a 12-year-old Sheldon in season 6, despite the show starting with both being 9 years old.

Considering the prequel nature of Young Sheldon, it, unfortunately, has a pre-determined end set by The Big Bang Theory. But because of its popularity, CBS is inclined on slowing down its pace in order to extend its time on the air. Sadly, they won’t be able to do it for much longer considering Armitage’s growth spurt which makes it difficult to present him as a 12-year-old boy given how much he has physically grown.

Young Sheldon hints that George’s death is close, as well, which is another reason why CBS has been slowing down its prequel storytelling. While The Big Bang Theory prequel can continue beyond the loss of the Cooper patriarch, it will significantly change the tone of the show. It may even spell the end of it. In the meantime, audiences can keep up with new episodes of Young Sheldon season 6 airing Thursdays on CBS.
