Elli Tamar, pictured, was left fuming after seeing Kmart's range of shorts for toddlers

A mum has been left fuming after making a surprising discovery when she visited a Kmart store to buy her two-year-old daughter shorts for summer.

Elli Tamar made a video after noticing the unusual length of the shorts on the racks in the girls’ clothing aisle and demanded the retailer to explain.

‘I just want shorts that look like real shorts and not underwear,’ she said.

In the video she showed off a pair of $15 silver shorts.

‘What two year old is wearing a pair of disco booty shorts? Her butt cheeks would actually be hanging out of these,’ she fumed.

She then showed off some $12 denim booty shorts in three slightly different styles.

‘The crotch is longer than the shorts,’ she complained.

She ended up heading to the boy’s section to get longer shorts for her toddler daughter because she thought they were ‘decent for a child’.

The mum claimed the shorts were far too short and thousands agreed with her

The mum’s video quickly went viral with hundreds of people commenting on the retailer’s shorts and over 43,000 hitting the like button.

‘I think they will be on clearance by the end of summer,’ one woman said.

While others questioned if ‘a nappy would even fit’ in the pants.

‘Some people say they sit mid thigh. I don’t know, they look shocking,’ added a third.

Another claimed it ‘should be illegal to sell them in that size’.

But some disagreed with the mum and claimed she was ‘sexualising’ the clothes.

‘They are not as bad as they look on the hanger,’ one mum said.

‘I don’t have kids but personally I think they slay,’ said another Kmart fan.

Elli isn’t the first mum to slam the shorts.

Althea noticed a shocking difference in length between girls and boys shorts.

The girls’ $15 Sequin Denim Shorts appeared to barely reached the mid-thigh while the boys’ $15 Moto Denim Shorts almost reached the knee.

In a video, Althea compared the two and seemed outraged by the realisation.

‘I’m in Kmart getting my daughter some shorts and look at this. Why are they so f***ing small?’ she said and held up the two shorts to show the difference.

‘Honesty, I f***ing hate this. Why do we make them this short for girls? This is a size three.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Kmart Australia for a comment.

The video has since been viewed more than 798,000 times and other women said the issue is upsetting.

Both customers and employees said they too have noticed the difference, with many mothers purchasing boys clothing for their daughters.

‘I buy boys clothes for my daughter. I find the jumpers and jeans are thicker too,’ one mum said.

‘As someone who works in Kmart, the amount of times I’ve been in the kids girl section folding clothes and just look at the clothes wondering who decided to make the clothes – especially the girls swimwear,’ another wrote.

Another employee said: ‘As a Kmart team member, I’ve noticed this too and it upsets me A LOT.’

‘I’ve seen parents who’ve added frilly extension to the bottom of girls shorts so they’re longer bur still cute. The fact people have had to do that instead of companies just making girls and boys,’ someone else pointed out.

In the comments Althea revealed she bought the denim shorts from the boys’ section because she ‘needed something quick’, but her daughter wasn’t pleased because she liked the flowers on the girls’ design.

‘It is distressing actually. It’s a problem that runs far deeper than short shorts. It’s the fact that young girls’ clothes are always decorated with the hunted animals. Unicorns, rabbits,’ Althea told news.com.au.

‘Then the boys’ clothes are the hunter dinosaurs, lions etc. Perpetuating the idea that girls and women are helpless and weak, and boys and men are aggressive and strong.’
