Just two months after The Waterfront's release, streaming service Netflix has canceled the crime drama - much to the despair of fans

Just two months after The Waterfront’s release, streaming service Netflix has already canceled the crime drama – much to the despair of fans.

The series, which tells the tale of North Carolina’s influential Buckley family trying to keep their fishing empire afloat, spent five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10.

However, even that wasn’t enough for the streaming agent to green-light a season 2.

Fans initially dubbed the series ‘the new Ozark’ – a Jason Bateman-led show which sees his character relocating to the Ozarks after a money-laundering scheme goes wrong, forcing him to pay off a substantial debt to a Mexican drug lord in order to keep his family safe.

However, viewers seeking an Ozark-shaped replacement are going to have to keep searching with many reacting to the news of the cancelation.

‘That’s disappointing, l enjoyed season one,’ one upset fan wrote in a social media post.

‘I literally finished it last night. They left off with such a great setup for season 2!’ whined another.

‘Didn’t make it into my bubble it’s just funny they’re canceling shows before I even know what they are. Maybe they should give stuff some time to build momentum and viewers before just killing everything in the crib,’ slammed another.

Another agreed, adding: ‘That sucks – I liked it!!!’

Others said they were not surprised by the cancelation, pointing out the Netflix often cancels TV shows after only one or two seasons.

‘I enjoyed it, but I’m not surprised it was canceled,’ one fan admitted. ‘Netflix has canceled better shows. The writer/director is a solid filmmaker and I’m surprised this show didn’t get more attention from his name alone.’

Deadline reported despite The Waterfront receiving better ratings than the two other dramas Netflix has canceled so far this year after one season – Pulse and The Residence – the series won’t be seeing a second season.

The show’s creator, Kevin Williamson, had previously shared his vision for season 2 with TVLine, following the show’s finale.

He shared the family’s patriarch Harlan and his son Cane would explore their relationship after finding a ‘new understanding,’ which came after Cane stepped up and killed Grady, played by Topher Grace, which brought them closer together.

However the show’s creator said he still doesn’t believe that they’ve ‘gotten to the core answer of who they are to each other as father and son,’ and there were plans for ‘more stumbling for them to do as father and son before they fully repair that relationship.’

The Waterfront cast includes nineties movie star Holt McCallany and Grown Ups star Maria Bello, as well as Melissa Benoist and Jake Weary.

Set in the fictional town of Havenport, the story follows the troublesome clan as their fishing empire crumbles around them.

Despite its current modest 64 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, viewers flooded social media with positive reviews after it initially hit screens.

One posted: ‘I was originally interested because Melissa Benoist is in it, but the rest of the cast got me even more, and honestly it looks like the show could be really fun too!’

A second penned: ‘The Waterfront, a new series is coming! From Kevin Williamson. This is definitely giving me the same vibes as Ozark did!’

‘I enjoyed the show. Reminded me of Ozarks a little bit, certainly not as good, but still thought it was solid,’ said a third fan.

A fourth commented: ‘Absolutely loving Belle Buckley’s style in #TheWaterfront on #Netflix. Polished. Sophisticated. Mature yet still youthful.’

While a fifth remarked: ‘I was originally interested because Melissa Benoist is in it, but the rest of the cast got me even more, and honestly it looks like the show could be really fun too!’
