New Steelers Coach Mike McCarthy Brings Former Jets & Falcons Staffer to Pittsburgh

Mike McCarthy’s latest staff hire also coached under Dan Quinn with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Pittsburgh Steelers proved they are in a new era with their most recent coaching hire.

The Steelers hired Steve Scarnecchia away from the Atlanta Falcons to be their new chief of Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff.

Scarnecchia was officially announced as the chief of staff Monday after he served the same role with Atlanta. He is the son of legendary longtime New England Patriots offensive-line coach Dante Scarnecchia.

Steve Scarnecchia previously also worked for the New York Jets in the same role under previous head coach Robert Saleh. Before that he was the Falcons’ assistant head coach under then-head coach Dan Quinn.

Steve Scarnecchia’s Role Will Be New To The Steelers

Scarnecchia’s title of chief of staff is vague, and the Steelers having a person in that position may be new and weird. Pittsburgh has never had a chief of its coaching staff, and McCarthy is just its fourth coach since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 — the Steelers have only had 11 head coaches over its past 80 years.

Yet, Scarnecchia’s new-job announcement detailed what he did in Atlanta and with the Jets and gave fans a window into what he may do in Pittsburgh.

“In his roles in Atlanta and New York, he was responsible for coordinating the team’s daily meetings and practice schedules and the overall football activities calendar,” staff reporter Teresa Varley wrote. “In addition, he established the budget for football operations and scheduling practices and organized team and staff events and provided administrative assistance to the coaching and operations staff.”

Scarnecchia was on Quinn’s staff when the Falcons won the NFC in 2016 but fell to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI. Before the Falcons he worked at Syracuse University, his alma mater, and with the Denver Broncos as a video coach.

Steve Scarnecchia Isn’t The Only New Steelers Coach

Scarnecchia may end up working closely with McCarthy, but he wasn’t the only new coach to join the new Steelers coach’s staff Monday.

Pittsburgh announced additions to its offensive-line staff (James Campen and Jahri Evans) and agreed to terms with Ramon Chinyoung to be the senior running backs coach and Adam Henry to be the wide-receivers coach.

Campen and Evans each worked under McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers. Campen spent 15 years as offensive line coach/run-game coordinator with the Packers and coached Evans in his final season as a player, 2017.

Evans played 11 NFL seasons with the Packers and New Orleans Saints before moving into coaching in 2022. He spent the past four seasons with the Saints, climbing to assistant offensive line coach in 2025.

Chinyoung also has an O-line background, since he was the Dallas Cowboys assistant O-line coach in 2025. He had previously worked under McCarthy as an assistant O-line coach/quality-control coach when McCarthy was the Cowboys head coach from 2020-24.

Henry jumped to the Steelers after coaching the past three seasons under Sean McDermott with the Buffalo Bills. Henry was Buffalo’s wide receivers coach but was let go when the Bills fired previous coach Sean McDermott on Jan. 19.

The Steelers made moves to their defensive coaching staff under new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham as well. Pittsburgh hired Jason Simmons as defensive pass-game coordinator and Scott McCurley as inside-linebackers coach.
