Life in New York isn’t cheap, and with rent prices rising a mom has left people gobsmacked after revealing she rents an extra apartment a month, just for some extra room.
Mom-of-five Kristi regularly shares her day-today with her 366,000 TikTok followers, giving them a glimpse of what it’s like to raise kids in the city.
Despite the fact they currently live in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment, which they pay $12,000 for, the family have now rented a place across the hall.
‘We got a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment for $6,000 a month to add extra space,’ she shared.
‘We are a blended family so sometimes there are seven of us, sometimes there are five of us [but] most of the time there are six of us, so we just needed some extra space.’

She pointed out the living space, which she said they’d be using as a ‘big playroom.’
‘We put a bed in the bedroom for visitors like my mom to come and stay, but full transparency we mainly use this room as a closet because we cleared out our closet in our main apartment to make room for our little baby girl and her crib,’ she added.
‘It’s worked out amazing and we’re so glad we have it.’
She quipped it also would make washing easier as both units had an in-built washer and dryer.
The mom didn’t specify where the apartment building was, just that it was uptown.
Followers were perplexed by the family’s decision to spend so much money on rent.
‘Or maybe just get a 4 bedroom 2 bath apartment to rent,’ one user suggested.
‘What do y’all do for a living that you can afford $18,000 a month just for rent not including all other living expenses,’ another shocked user wrote.
‘$6k a month for a playroom,’ someone else chimed in.
In another video, the mom said they also had a house in Utah that they regularly spent time in.

In a TikTok earlier in the month, Kristi revealed her husband, David, retired at 40 and is now a stay-at-home dad.
‘I grew up poor,’ David explained in a video, describing his family as being so poor that a hamburger was considered a luxury.
‘[This] taught me to work really hard from a young age,’ he shared. ‘I started working when I was 12 years old.’
David, who worked in professional sales, said he also started investing early and started practicing healthy financial habits.
He started investing in stocks at 14 and bought his first rental property at 21, and just ‘never stopped investing.’
The family, who have lived in New York for four years, say they take their time in the city ‘year by year’ and have no plans to leave anytime soon.
‘Every year we reevaluate, how’s everyone doing physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, how are we doing financially, how are the kids doing academically, socially – we just kind of reevaluate,’ he said.
