Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears are coming off a loss against the Detroit Lions, and now, they have a bit more pie in their face.
The Chicago Bears are going back to the drawing board in the Windy City this week after coming out of their Week 2 matchup against the Detroit Lions empty handed and with a 0-2 record. The Bears certainly have promise, and new head coach Ben Johnson can’t turn things around overnight, but it didn’t feel good to see the team lose to the Detroit Lions with that 52-21 spread.
Following the game, Johnson has talked a lot about what it was like to go up against his former team. He worked with Campbell for years, obviously, and talked about how he knows Campbell and wasn’t surprised by his actions during the game.
“What’s he supposed to do? It’s fourth-and-goal, what do you want him to do,” Johnson said when asked about Campbell’s fourth-down decision. “Yeah he could have kicked the field goal. They don’t kick field goals. They go for it there. He was doing what he’s supposed to do.” He added, “That’s what he does.”
Now, the NFL has made an announcement that’s even more pie in the face for the Chicago Bears. But, the season is young, so don’t get too depressed about this one.
Chicago Bears’ Defense Helps Detroit Lions QB Get an Honor
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has picked up his first big honor of the 2025-26 season, and it’s for his numbers against the Chicago Bears’ defense on Sunday. Goff has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week following the win over the Chicago Bears. That stings a little bit.
According to ESPN, Goff finished the game “with a near perfect passer rating (156.0) while throwing for 334 yards and five touchdowns.” The NFL point out that, “Goff was a touchdown machine in the Lions’ 52-21 throttling of the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Goff threw five touchdown passes — equaling the amount of incompletions on his day.”
So, his numbers were stellar, and he deserves this honor, but we don’t have to like it. It would be thrilling to see Caleb Williams get this honor at some point during this season.
The Ben Johnson and Jared Goff Moment You Have to See
After the game, first, Johnson first had a very quick handshake with Campbell, and it did not look friendly. It really looked like Johnson just wanted to get out of there and hide in a bush somewhere.
Then, camera footage caught Goff trying to catch up to his former boss and shake his hand and exchange some niceties’. But, Johnson, again, did not seem interested.
In a video shared on X by Dov Kleiman on Tuesday, September 16, Kleiman notes, “Ben Johnson’s beef with the Lions is real. Jared Goff literally had to chase him down. He didn’t wait to say hi to anyone.”
It’s always difficult to lose a game, and this matchup had high stakes and emotions. So, it’s difficult to blame the Bears’ fearless leader for shying away from any interaction with his former team. But, it was a bad look, as it always is with these sorts of exchanges.
