I escaped to Spain for a few days last month and, predictably, leaned into food and wine. Many of us default to Rioja – never a bad call – but Spain’s red scene is far broader. From Atlantic-influenced Galicia to Garnacha-led Navarra and the volcanic soils of Tenerife, this week’s picks spotlight styles with lift and personality, alongside one classic Ribera del Duero for depth and winter-ready comfort.

Bright Galician Mencía (often likened to Cabernet Franc) with cherry and violet perfume, supple texture and a subtly flinty edge. Savoury, elegant and nicely poised.

Low-intervention Garnacha (that’s funk-free!) bursting with red fruit, with a floral, lightly stemmy edge – an easy pour for natural wine newbies.

A 100 per cent Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Rioja’s bolder sibling – velvety and full, gently spiced with dark plum fruit and a warm, huggable depth.

Expressive red with dried wildflower and earthy notes, lifted by bright acidity. Serve chilled as an apéritif or with umami-rich dishes like mushroom risotto.
