A pregnant woman has issued a stark warning about eating a popular food while expecting after she claimed it led to her testing positive for opiates.

Cassey Hoff, from Maryland, who is currently expecting her fifth child, was in for a shock when she got some routine tests done during a recent OBGYN appointment and noticed that her results had come back as ‘abnormal.’

Upon investigating, Hoff learned that the doctors had found traces of opiates in her system, despite her never taking the drug.

She soon realized that one of her pregnancy cravings was to blame.

It turns out, Hoff had been eating avocado toast with ‘everything bagel seasoning’ every morning for breakfast for ‘two weeks straight’ ahead of the test.

There were poppy seeds in the seasoning, which are coated in small amounts of morphine and codeine.

She took to TikTok earlier this month to warn others after making the shock discovery, and it left other pregnant women across the globe stunned.

‘I tested positive for opiates at my OBGYN blood draw this past week and I’m clearly not a drug addict,’ she began in the now-viral clip.

‘Tell me how I go to the OBGYN on Tuesday for the normal first panel blood draw. I open my results today to see that my five panel drug screen flagged abnormal.

‘I open it and I’m going down the list and it gets to opiates and it says positive. I immediately am like, what the f**k? I do not do any sort of opiate… why am I testing positive for opiates in my blood draw?’

Hoff explained that she ultimately confided in her sister about it, who reminded her of her recent pregnancy craving.

‘She goes, “Wait a minute haven’t you been craving avocado toast?” I said, “Yeah, I’ve been eating it every morning. Why?”‘ Hoff continued.

‘She says, “Cassie, avocado toast has everything bagel seeds on it which has poppy seeds in it.”

‘So because I’m eating poppy seeds for breakfast every morning I tested positive for opiates in my blood draw.’

According to Mayo Clinic, ‘Poppy seed pods contain morphine and codeine, which are opioid medicines. The seeds are coated with small amounts of these opioids, which remain in the liquid when the seeds are removed.

‘The amount of opioids in the seeds can vary depending on the growing and harvesting conditions of the plant.’

Hoff explained that she ‘immediately called the doctor freaking out’ because she was worried they’d ‘think she was a drug addict and call CPS or try to take her baby.’

She spoke to a nurse who told her the doctor would call her back ensured her that they weren’t concerned.

‘I’m over here freaking the f**k out,’ she added, before concluding with a warning to others: ‘So yeah, just so you know, if you eat poppy seeds, you might test positive for opiates in your blood or urine.’

Hoff’s video quickly went viral, gaining more than 1.4 million views, and others rushed to the comment section to share similar stories.

‘True story… I had a trace amount show up [in a drug test] after eating a whole package of lemon poppyseed muffins,’ one user shared.

‘My dad was a pilot and couldn’t have poppy seeds so I’ve known this for awhile,’ said another.

‘It’s something you just don’t think about. We got him lemon poppy seed muffins at his retirement because he loved them and couldn’t eat them for 40 years!’

‘The first job I got after college was the first time I had to have a drug test done for my employment and they told me not to eat anything with poppy seeds for 48 hours prior to the test. It was so random to me at the time,’ someone else penned.

‘Yessss! I [ate] everything bagels during my pregnancy and came up positive on my drug test. I was so upset,’ read a fourth comment.

‘My daughter did too. The ER treated her like a drug addict,’ said a fifth.
