Prison Break could soon be about to get a fully-fledged spin-off series – but fans are not happy about it.

On Thursday, Deadline reported that Hulu has picked up a pilot episode of a new show set in the same universe as the infamous crime drama made famous by Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell.

While plot details so far remain up in the air, the project is said to be helmed by The Outlaws co-creator Elgin James.

It was previously reported that the new drama will not focus on Wentworth and Dominic’s characters Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows.

Prison Break fans, however, couldn’t be less enthusiastic about the potential new show in the works and slammed the lack of original ideas.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one said: ‘LEAVE IT ALONE.’

‘Can we stop rebooting stuff nobody’s gonna watch!’ another post read.

A third raged: ‘Nothing has ever been more unnecessary than this. Serialized television is truly dead because no one has original ideas anymore. It’s just pointless reboot after pointless reboot.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, a fourth continued: ‘For the love of God just make new original ideas instead of dragging old shows into a mess.’

‘Stop rebooting shows and reusing old ideas,’ added a fifth. ‘It’s boring now.’

A sixth said: ‘This is one of my two favorite series, but I’m not into it being rebooted. It also hasn’t been a decade since the last season.

‘Prison Break without either Scofield brother just feels wrong.’

‘No new original content… we need to investigate this, because it’s getting out of hand,’ a seventh posted.

‘A majority of shows now seem to be reboots or revivals of old shows to build off nostalgia and it needs to stop. Is it because of the strike???’

‘Can we just let this go?’ asked another, while a ninth simply wrote: ‘Just cancel it now.’

Prison Break ran for five seasons with the first four airing between 2005 and 2009, before it was revived in 2017 for another outing.

The gritty drama focused on Michael Schofield’s (Miller) plan to help Lincoln Burrows (Purcell) escape prison after he was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit.

Season five was a sequel set seven years after the original show and saw Michael return from the dead as he fought to get his identity back and take down Poseidon, the person responsible for his disappearance.

The limited series ended with Michael refusing to join the CIA so that he could live a normal life with his wife Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies) and their son Mike.

In 2020, Miller announced he would not return for a sixth season as he doesn’t ‘want to play straight characters’ anymore.

Taking to Instagram to discuss trolling he has received on social media about his sexuality, the actor slammed those with ‘Stone Age values’ for hitting out at him for being gay.

While he does get ‘affectionate’ and ‘supportive’ messages from fans, Wentworth felt the negative trolling he’d received proved it was even more important for him to tell queer stories rather than return to the role of Scofield.

He wrote: ‘On a related note… I’m out. Of PB. Officially. Not because of static on social media (although that has centered the issue).

‘I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told). So. No more Michael.

‘If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.

‘If you’re hot and bothered because you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one… That’s your work. – W.M.’
