Chef Nick Makrides commented: ‘So sorry to hear that Nagi. It’s such a heavy loss. To suddenly be in the space he was in without him there. It’s so hard.

‘Give yourself space to grieve and be sad as much as your body needs it. Hopefully in time you can remember him with less pain and more happiness.’

‘Hearts are broken all around Australia with this news. I’m so sorry Nagi, he will always be incredibly loved,’ said blogger Annie Nguyen.

‘Oh Nagi, I am so so sorry for this tremendous loss. Dozer will live forever in our hearts!’ wrote chef Danielle Alvarez.

The announcement came just days after the relatively private food writer and cook revealed that Dozer was critically ill following weeks in intensive care.

In a raw blog post, Maehashi explained that Dozer, who had long been a central presence on RecipeTin Eats, was hospitalised with a severe double lung infection.

‘I’ve cried a thousand tears and there’s a million more to come,’ she wrote.

Dozer, who was almost 14 years old and had other underlying health conditions, was admitted to SASH with pneumonia.

'Dozer Maehashi. 26 April 2012 - 5 February 2026,' she added, giving the date of Dozer's birth and death

While the initial outlook was grim, Maehashi said he had showed remarkable resilience.

What followed, however, has been a devastating emotional rollercoaster. Dozer was discharged, only to be rushed back to ICU two hours later with complications.

He was discharged again – then returned to intensive care just 10 hours later.

The update marked a painful acknowledgement of what lay ahead.

‘We’re in the final chapter of Life of Dozer and we all know how the story will end,’ she wrote.

For Maehashi, whose career has been built around warmth, generosity and the everyday rituals of food, the hope now is simple and deeply human: time.

Before that final goodbye, she said her greatest wish is for Dozer to come home in good enough condition to enjoy the things he loves most.

As a result, Maehashi announced she is taking time away from work.

Her partner Jean-Baptiste Alexandre and her brother Goh will temporarily take over the day-to-day running of both RecipeTin Eats and RecipeTin Meals, the food bank initiative she founded to help people experiencing food insecurity.
