The NHL trade deadline is starting to heat up, as a few meaningful moves have made semi-shockwaves across the league. On Thursday, the Ottawa Senators linked up with the Los Angeles Kings to acquire left-winger Warren Foegele. Foegels had been with the Kings for two seasons and also spent time on the ice with the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers.
According to multiple reports, Los Angeles is receiving a second-round draft pick, which had been previously acquired by the Buffalo Sabres, and the Kings and Senators are also swapping conditional third-round picks in the trade.

Warren Foegele had a fairly strong 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Kings, but he has struggled a bit this season to make his mark on the scoresheet. That’s likely the reason that Los Angeles decided to move on from him, and it didn’t take that much capital for Ottawa to acquire him from Ontario.
In 47 games this season, Foegele has just nine points on seven goals and two assists. Last season, Foegele posted a 46-point season with 22 goals. 2024-25 was a career-year for Foegele, but he just hasn’t been able to replicate that production. His +/- was up to 36 last season, but this year, the Kings were in a six-goal deficit while he was on the ice.
He has one year left on a three-year, $10.5 million deal that he signed in July 1, 2024. For his nine-year NHL career, Foegele has 111 goals and 107 assists in 560 total games.
The Senators (29-22-9) are sixth in the Atlantic Division, six points behind the Boston Bruins for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. They visit the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

What This Trade Means for Ottawa?
Ottawa needs to keep its foot on the gas pedal down the stretch, and it’s expected that they will be buyers this trade deadline.
Well, this is the Senators’ first move in doing so.
All things considered, Foegele might find himself on the second line of Ottawa. He’s a good penalty killer and makes up for his poor scoring play by being a gritty guy. On a gritty Senators team, Foegele might even fit in perfectly, as his time in Los Angeles comes to an abrupt end.
The race for that second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference will be a fascinating storyline in the NHL, but Ottawa is signaling that it will not go away in that race, or at least willingly go away.
