A woman has asked for advice after her teenager used her expensive shampoo and let it pour down the drain out of carelessness.

The British woman took to parenting platform Mumsnet to explain that after she found the hair products ‘lying down with the lids off’ and ‘literally going down the drain’ in the shower.

She went on to ask if she would be unreasonable to ask her daughter to replace the products with her own money.

Some suggested that she should make her daughter replace the items to learn about taking responsibility, while others said it would be ‘mean’ to make her spend her birthday money.

The disgruntled mother explained: ‘My hair has been really damaged due to colouring. I brought some expensive shampoo and conditioner to help out, I have only used it once.

‘I explained to my teen it’s for my hair and it’s expensive. She has long curly hair and I’m always buying things for her hair.

‘Today I went to get in the shower saw both bottles of my shampoo and conditioner lying down with the lids off and it literally going down the drain.

‘I feel really annoyed! It’s not just the fact she has used it without asking but to not have enough respect to even look after it!

‘Half the bottle’s gone now. She recently had her birthday and has money. Am I unreasonable to say she needs to replace them with her money.’

Commenters were divided over the best approach, with many taking issue with the fact she’d ben spending her birthday money on the replacement items.

One person said: ‘If she doesn’t do chores for pocket money then docking this would be so easy, whereas taking birthday money seems mean.

‘Once sufficient time has passed and it’s time to reinstate pocket money wait until she’s done the chores before giving it to her.

‘The point of earning pocket money is to learn important life skills of working for and valuing something.

‘I’m in my 50s, my pocket money (aka my salary) is for paying for the things I need in my life, including if i should ever damage someone else’s property.’

Another wrote: ‘It’s annoying but in the scheme of life its not a big deal, you haven’t got her at home for many more years.’

While another said: ‘Very disappointing I agree, but no way would I expect my child to use birthday money to replace the hair products, that’s just mean. I would buy myself some more hair care and NOT leave it in the bathroom.’

However others suggested making her replace the products with her own money was 'a fair punishment' and will teach her 'consequences'

One person wrote: ‘She does need to understand pretty quickly that actions have consequences: as she isn’t doing chores and earning pocket money then it needs to be her birthday money that covers the cost of replacing your hair products. She’s going to be a nightmare flatmate for someone in a few years’ time.’

Another said: ‘Too right she should pay to replace them. Bad enough she used them after she was warned not to, but to leave them lying on their sides with the lids of! WTF? That would break my heart.

‘It’s beyond careless and at her age she definitely needs to learn that actions have consequences.’

Someone else said: ‘She will only learn if her actions inconvenience her, so yes I would make her pay for a replacement, or stop pocket money until the debt was paid.’

While another agreed saying: ‘Replacing the bottle is a natural consequence, hopefully it will be a good lesson and she’ll be more mindful in future.’

The woman went on to explain in another post that it’s not the first time her daughter has been so careless.

She said: ‘She’s just turned 15, it feels like I say things like this daily. She’s constantly doing things I have to correct her about. I understand she’s learning but she just leaves a trail of destruction. It’s like she doesn’t care because she knows I will pick it up.

She later added: ‘Literally £40 down the drain. I don’t understand how she doesn’t get it. She’s reckless with phones, laptops, her room. And every time I’ve replaced and fixed this for her.

‘She literally does nothing to get pocket money. I’ve written a chore chart, I’ve offered far too much money to do things in the house. She never cleans up after herself.

‘It would be an absolute headache to get her to do things she should be doing anyway, then offer her my own money to give back to me.’
