A wave of nostalgia swept social media as people around the world kicked off the new year by sharing decade-old photos of themselves.
The Instagram trend unearthed heavily edited selfies that were all the rage in 2016, as social media users smoothened their complexions, enhanced their eyelashes, and blurred any imperfections with apps like FaceTune.
Even celebrities weren’t immune to the pull of these effects, with stars like Kris Jenner, Bella Hadid, Ariana Grande, Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Lopez, and Paris Hilton frequently posting filtered photos online.
Since then, the fad of posting excessively airbrushed, perfect pictures has, more or less, died.
However, it appears Karren Brady isn’t eschewing Instagram filters entirely after viewers noticed she looked dramatically different on the latest series of The Apprentice.
While the advisor, 56, embraced a more au naturel appearance for the season premiere last night, her Instagram photos still appear to be heavily edited – complete with long, fluttery eyelashes and a more defined jawline.
And Baroness Brady isn’t the only celebrity whose social media posts are in stark contrast with real life.

While Karren Brady, 56, embraced a more au naturel appearance for the season 20 premiere of The Apprentice last night, her Instagram photos still appear to be heavily edited
Her avatar on The Apprentice was also a marked departure from her Instagram persona
The Apprentice returned to screens for its 20th series on Thursday night, with a new cohort of candidates vying for the chance to become Lord Sugar’s business partner.
But advisor Karren, who has appeared on the show since 2010, garnered just as much attention as the chaotic actions of the contestants, as fans noticed she looked visibly different from past seasons.
Not only was the businesswoman visibly slimmer, Karren opted to wear minimal makeup as she let her natural features shine through.
Her avatar on The Apprentice was also a marked departure from her Instagram persona.
In a post promoting the reality show, which is set in Hong Kong this season, Karren showed off a smooth, blemish-free and heavily bronzed visage – without a fine line in sight.
Katie Price
From artificially generated fake lashes to a plumper pout, the mother-of-five is rarely filter-free in photos and videos on her social media accounts
Fans have complained she looks nothing like herself in these photos
Katie Price has come under fire from her fans for editing her appearance in photos over the years
Katie Price has frequently been criticised for editing her photos so heavily that she looks completely unrecognisable in them.
The ex-glamour model, who recently tied the knot for the fourth time, is known for using filters and effects to enhance her appearance online.
From artificially generated fake lashes to a plumper pout, the mother-of-five is rarely filter-free in photos and videos on her social media accounts.
And it appears her new husband, Lee Andrews, who wed Katie in Dubai last week, has also been taken in by the world of filters.
One recent image from the 43-year-old Facebook page is almost unidentifiable as him when compared to a version of the same photo which appeared in an article two years ago.
The social media snap shows Lee with a darker beard and with smooth, tanned skin, whilst his jawline is much more defined.
Other edited photos show the entrepreneur with distinctive pearly white teeth, in stark contrast to a more natural smile in photos on his LinkedIn profile.
Kris Jenner
The results of Kris Jenner’s $100,000 facelift – alongwith her heavy use of filters – were revealed after the Kardashian matriarch underwent plastic surgery last year
The 69-year-old momager was recently photographed up close in Los Angeles as she showcased what her $100k facelift really looks like
The results of Kris Jenner’s $100,000 facelift – alongwith her heavy use of filters – were revealed after the Kardashian matriarch underwent plastic surgery last year.
When Jenner, 70, first took to Instagram to reveal she had undergone a face lift procedure, stunned fans compared her youthful appearance to that of her daughter, Kim Kardashian.
However, an unfiltered and unretouched photo of Kris taken at the Los Angeles premiere of Kim’s widely derided legal drama, All’s Fair, led fans to conclude Instagram is all ‘smoke and mirrors’.
Fans took to Reddit to discuss the un-doctored look. ‘This is the real Kris, without all the smoke and mirrors,’ said one person while another wrote, ‘Busted!’
Then there was this comment: ‘That face lift might have taken a couple years off but she’s still a 70-year-old woman that continues to age, no procedure in the world will ever stop nature.’
Gemma Collins
Former TOWIE star’s relationship with Instagram filters has changed over the years, as seen across the different photos shared on her social media accounts
Gemma Collins recently showed off the results of her weight loss journey that saw her shed an impressive 3 st.
The former TOWIE star, 44, who is engaged to businessman Rami Hawash, has been documenting her experiences on Instagram as Gemma’s appearance has changed multiple times over the years.
So, it seems, has her relationship with filters.
Some snaps from Gemma’s Instagram page appear to be heavily edited, while Gemma can be seen flaunting her make-up-free complexion in others.
Fans recently complained that Gemma looked nothing like herself after she suffered a photo-editing fail last December.
As she posed in her ski gear on the slopes, Gemma left fans baffled with the snap as they commented ‘that isn’t you’ under the post.
Beyonce
The Grammy winner shocked fans after sharing edited photos from her appearance at the F1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas last November
Her skills on stage are unrivaled, but Beyoncé’s photo editing skills leave much to be desired.
Last November, the Grammy winner shocked fans after sharing edited photos from her appearance at the F1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas.
In the images, which were also plastered all over her website, the Beautiful Liar singer looks far more polished than the unedited photos that were taken at the event.
In one image shared by Beyoncé herself, the diva looks much glossier with a taut jawline and perfect skin.
Once the photos hit social media, fans were quick to point out that photo editing tools like FaceTune or FaceApp may have been used to enhance Beyoncé’s looks.
‘Bey absolutely edits her IG pics and it’s been talked about for a while now,’ one person declared at the time.
Khloe Kardashian
Khloe has been criticised for using filters and editing applications to such a great extent that her photos are very different from her real-life appearance
The Kardashians are known for their picture-perfect social lives but youngest sister Khloe has frequently been accused of ‘filtering’ her photos heavily.
Over the years, Khloe has been criticised for using filters and editing applications to such a great extent that her photos are very different from her real-life appearance.
The backlash only grew after Khloe, 41, was discovered to have edited her pictures shortly after she said she had scaled back on using filters last year.
