Free agent edge defender Jadeveon Clowney took a visit with the Dallas Cowboys earlier this week, but left without signing a contract. The Cowboys are looking at add some pass rush help after watching that unit struggle in Week 1 against the Eagles after trading away star ED Micah Parsons to the Packers, rather than sign him to a major extension.

Cowboys Executive Vice President (EVP) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Stephen Jones joined the 94.1 San Antonio’s Sports Star radio show on Thursday to discuss how Clowney’s visit went and if Dallas could still sign him in the future.

“No, we’re still looking at him and seeing how this thing’s gonna work out, but certainly he’s a guy who we’re looking at who could give us some help on the outside,” Jones said, indicating they would still like to bring him on if possible. Critically, while Clowney would like to weigh all his options, he seems open to the idea of signing with Dallas later in the season.

“The biggest thing on someone like Jadeveon is just to get to know him and kinda see what his plan is and what his thoughts are,” Jones said. “Obviously he was someone who hadn’t been in a [training] camp, but those veterans, that’s kinda their plan. And we’ve had those types that have really worked out for us in a positive way, but just to get to spend time — let him get to know us, our teammates.”

“Because a lot of guys like that certainly want to find the right, not only the money’s gotta be right, but the right situation,” he continued. “It was a great opportunity for him to get to see what our organization is all about, to meet [Dallas head coach Brian] Schottenheimer and his staff, to meet [Cowboys owner] Jerry [Jones] and I, and [Vice President of Player Personnel] Will [McClay], to get to see the facility. I think he was certainly impressed with that, but that’s really what goes into the visit. It’s not as much about the workout with someone like that, he’s a guy who keeps himself in shape and played at a high level for 10-plus years in the NFL.”

Jadeveon Clowney Remains a High-Level NFL Player

Clowney has 15 sacks over his last two seasons in Carolina and Baltimore, to go with 89 tackles, two forced fumbles, and nine passes defensed. The former No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Texans out of South Carolina in 2014 is an elite run defender off the edge who can still give you some juice in the pass rush.

Without Parsons, the Cowboys lack a game-changer at edge rusher. Clowney might not be that anymore, but he’s a high floor player who will hold up against the run, something that this organization has preached it wants to improve at. He’s the type of veteran addition that can jumpstart a team’s season.
