With our energy levels still in recovery after a hectic December, January is the month when we all reach for a reset. We focus on cutting back on what we eat and drink and swapping overindulgence for healthy foods that nourish our body and boost our immune system: think all those homemade soups and broths; ginger, turmeric and honey.

When it comes to our January wardrobes, though, the same rules don’t necessarily apply. Keeping cosy and warm doesn’t have to be boring. Life is too short for uninspiring clothes – no matter what time of year it is.

So here are my style tips and tweaks to help add a little joy to your dark mornings…

  • Introducing pops of colour to your neutrals is an easy way to inject an element of fun. Rich burgundy and heavenly blue are instant mood lifters, while greens and butter yellows are new tones for spring. And don’t forget to recycle your festive reds, as I’m pictured doing with these trousers by Cos.
  • One cold-weather mainstay – and a favourite of mine – is a fabulous faux-fur coat. Try a belted style worn over simple straight-leg jeans and sharp pointed-toe boots. The look is cosy chic at its best. Or opt for a longer version and team over a knitted dress or wool skirt.
  • Layering is practical at this time of the year – and fun. Team a cute cardigan or V-neck sweater over a button-down shirt, with a pencil or slightly flared skirt. Also experiment with off-beat colour combos. For example, keep functional staples such as knitwear, skirts and trousers in muted shades, then contrast with a surprising flash of red, say via a shirt layered underneath. Also ‘shrobe’ a bright knit over greys and blacks for instant energy.
  • Statement details are an easy style win. From a fringed coat, like the one I’m pictured wearing, to imaginative headwear – bonnets and balaclavas are currently trending – to smaller but just as bold touches – burgundy or red socks and chic leather gloves in a standout shade.
