Lottery winners have spilled on the 'dark side' of becoming multi-millionaires, with many wishing someone had warned them before claiming the jackpot

Lottery winners have spilled on the ‘dark side’ of becoming multi-millionaires, with many wishing someone had warned them before claiming the jackpot.

A man prompted a fascinating discussion on Reddit by asking: ‘Lottery winners, what is the dark side of sudden wealth that nobody warns you about?’

Sadly, the responses show that even lottery winners don’t always get the perfect life money can buy.

‘I know a man who won AUD $20 million. Tax free. His family just fell apart. Ten years later, they all hate him and one another too. He’s now living on a boat with two hookers,’ one person shared in a Reddit thread.

And he’s not the only one to live a miserable life, with one anonymous lottery winner sharing: ‘A lot of people don’t warn you that sudden money can ruin relationships – friends and family start treating you differently and not always in a good way.’

‘It also puts insane pressure on you to manage it perfectly and the stress can hit harder than the thrill of winning.’

Another explained that the ‘dark side’ of winning their fortune was ‘losing control over your life almost overnight’.

One observer said they noticed lottery winners almost had the same pattern as soon as they became multi-millionaires.

‘Once people know, privacy is gone. Friends act differently, relatives show up with expectations, and random people feel entitled to your time or money. The stress comes less from the cash and more from the attention,’ they shared.

One of the biggest mistakes many lottery winners make is telling everyone they’ve hit the jackpot.

‘A lot of winners say the biggest mistake was not staying quiet early on, which is why understanding how lottery winners can remain anonymous after a win and what that process looks like matters more than people realise,’ one shared.

‘The money can fix problems, but the attention can create brand-new ones if you don’t protect yourself early.’

Others revealed how winning a small fortune sent their lives spiralling, including one man who blew his $10,000 prize on drugs.

And he wasn’t alone.

‘Oh man. I know that feeling. I was in a car accident in the ninth grade and got $5,000,’ one recalled.

‘Once I found out my parents were lying to me about me not being able to get money out of my bank account without them being there, I blew it all on drugs, alcohol and a fake ID card.’

Last year, it emerged an Aussie family was torn apart after their daughter won the lottery jackpot, with the explosive fallout becoming the talk of the town.

A woman revealed that her close family friends in Perth were at the centre of a feud lasting decades after stealing their daughter’s winning ticket.

The family had been playing the same lottery numbers every week for years.

Before one of their family holidays, they decided to pay in advance for several weeks of lottery entries so they wouldn’t miss any draws while they were away.

But things took a turn when the daughter asked her parents to mind her tickets.

‘Parents also played regularly and had their own numbers that were different,’ the woman explained.

‘Surprise, surprise, the daughter’s numbers came up and her ticket won first division.

‘All hell broke loose when the daughter returned expecting to have the winning ticket, which the parents swapped and said was theirs.’

The woman said she was just a child when the family’s chaos took place, but she still remembers vividly how the ‘lying’ couple ‘scammed’ their own daughter.

‘Absolutely diabolical stuff,’ she said.

‘The news swept through my family – they were close family friends – and the entire neighbourhood.

‘It was all people were talking about, and it broke that family up for decades. The daughter and her family moved continents.’

After the ugly rift, the woman said she lost touch with the family.

‘We stopped being their friends,’ she explained.

‘I am told they only reconciled because the mother was dying of cancer.’

Decades after the lottery drama, the woman said many people from the family’s hometown are still angry at the parents over what they did to their daughter.

‘Both parents are now dead and we still occasionally talk about this,’ she said.

‘People are still disgusted even 40 years later.’
