Renowned distribution firm Abramorama has secured global rights to Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision. This new documentary delves into the origins of Jimi Hendrix’s iconic recording studio, a project managed by Experience Hendrix LLC.
John McDermott Returns with a New Installment
The film is helmed by John McDermott, a familiar name in Hendrix documentaries. His previous works include Electric Church and Music, Money, Madness: Jimi Hendrix Live In Maui, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Music Film in 2022. The latest doc will premiere at the Quad in New York on August 9 before rolling out globally.
From Nightclub to Recording Studio
Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision offers an enthralling exploration of how a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub was transformed into a state-of-the-art recording space. Initially, Hendrix aimed to create an experiential nightclub, heavily influenced by his experiences at Greenwich Village’s vibrant Cerebrum nightspot. The extravagant setting, replete with flashing lights and swirling sounds, inspired Hendrix to collaborate with architect John Storyk and his manager Michael Jeffery to revamp the Generation Club into “an electric studio of participation.” Eventually, the project pivoted from a nightclub to what would become the first artist-owned commercial recording studio.
A Legacy Beyond Music
The documentary dives into how Hendrix’s untimely death left untapped musical potential. Despite this loss, his brainchild studio cemented his legacy by hosting legendary artists. Names like John Lennon, AC/DC, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé have all recorded there. This enduring influence highlights one of Hendrix’s most significant contributions in an ever-evolving music industry.
Behind-the-Scenes Insights
Featuring rare footage and interviews, the documentary presents unprecedented glimpses into Hendrix classics like “Freedom,” “Angel,” and “Dolly Dagger.” The technical side is brought to life by recording engineer Eddie Kramer, who previously won an Emmy for the documentary Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train A Comin’. Additionally, Steve Winwood recounts his experience of joining Hendrix on the inaugural night of recording at Electric Lady Studios.
