Aldi Australia has sent shoppers into a frenzy after quietly launching its very own range of blind boxes.

Following the craze of Labubus and Bunnings Warehouse Mystery Box Mini Bears, the Aldi Mini Collectables launched across stores.

As with all blind boxes, buyers don’t know which design they’ve scored until they open the packaging – a gamble that’s driving excitement, repeat purchases and early-morning store visits.

Each $5 capsule contains five surprise miniature toys with 30 to collect. The figurines replicate popular Aldi food brands, ranging from ice cream to orange juice and tomato sauce.

Comedian Christian Hull quickly dubbed it as his new obsession and shared a video opening a few of the collectables in a TikTok video.

‘I was in Aldi, I just wanted to see what the specials were, and then I saw this round, shiny ball,’ he said.

‘My obsession to collect things is real. The FOMO (fear of missing out) was too great to walk past these.’

After collecting all but one bear from Bunnings, the Aldi blind box felt as if it was ‘filling a void’ for him.

What are blind boxes – and why are they everywhere?

Blind boxes are sealed collectible items sold in identical packaging, meaning customers don’t know which figure they’ve purchased until it’s opened.

The concept originated in Asia, particularly in Japan and China, where brands like Pop Mart popularised the model through designer toys such as Labubu, Molly, and Dimoo.

The thrill lies in the surprise element and the chase for rare or ‘secret’ variants – a format that has since exploded globally, especially on TikTok, where unboxing videos regularly rack up millions of views.

While blind boxes have traditionally been associated with fashion-forward designer toys and pop culture franchises, Bunnings’ take puts a distinctly Australian spin on the trend.

Among the potential items, he hoped for the tub of ice cream, tomato sauce bottle or orange juice.

When he opened the first box, Christian was delighted to find he received the ice cream tub and described the surprise as ‘euphoric’.

‘That was the rush I needed. What is wrong with me?’ he said.

In the pack he also received a small can of corn kernels, BBQ Snakos, cheese slices, and Animal Shapes lollies.

Christian hopes to collect all 30 miniature items to place on a trinket shelf in his home.

The video quickly exceeded 650,000 views and others shared their excitement in the comments.

‘This has been my obsession for years Christian – welcome and have all the fun with your new love,’ one wrote.

‘For $2.50 you’d be losing money if you didn’t buy,’ another said.

American and British TikTok users watched in envy, hoping the product arrives in overseas stores soon.

One shopper who goes by the moniker ‘Fat Mum Slim’ spotted the item on shelves in mid-November and was curious what others thought of it.

‘Oh so cute! Aldi has the cutest little blind bags with mini grocery items! I know we don’t need more plastic but I couldn’t resist getting one to see what they’re like,’ she said.

‘$4.99 for five minis. I’m curious to know if people will love them or loathe them!’

However, opinions were mixed.

‘Loathe – as a mum of a six-year-old and ten-month-old it’s already hard enough keeping track of things he can choke on we don’t need more mini plastic collectable things,’ one said.

‘If you know a teacher and you have these sitting in a cupboard, they will definitely find a way to use them,’ another wrote.

‘Love the little minis so cute! My four-year-old loved playing with them this morning as a shop keeper and we are also using them to learn numbers,’ a third said.
