If you thought tankinis were dated and unflattering, think again. This season, the 90s swimwear trend – with a modern twist – is back, and it’s perfect for anyone after a little more coverage, or wanting to add a retro feel to their summer wardrobe.
From thong sandals to cargo trousers, ’90s nostalgia is one of this season’s biggest trends, so it was only a matter of time before our swimwear got on board, too.
Featuring a cami-esque top with matching bikini bottoms, the style is flattering on all body shapes. While the swimwear has previously had a bad rep for being frumpy or old-fashioned, the tankini 2.0 has had a few tweaks to keep it feeling fresh and sleek.
Unlike the original look, most tankinis currently available are cut with a subtle crop. This means, instead of falling loosely below the hips, they cut in just above the midriff to highlight the waist. They’ve also ditched old-fashioned, fussy prints in favour of chic minimalist designs in block colours or stripes.
The best part? It’s 100% socially acceptable to wear a tankini top almost anywhere. So, pair it with a pair of floaty trousers, and you can quite literally stroll from the bar straight to the beach without having to swap out your top.
We love how content creator Rebecca Ferraz-Wyatt paired her TBCo two-piece with bloomer trousers below (scroll to slide three). Have we just discovered a genius space-saving packing hack?
