It was a realization that might have torn the couple apart.

Alana, 28, from Colorado, had been with her boyfriend, Kevin, 35, for a little over three years when she realized that she was attracted to women.

While it was something she had always felt deep down, those feelings became hard to deny in 2020.

Alana – who asked to omit her last name for privacy reasons – decided she wanted to ‘explore that part of [herself].’ But she also didn’t want to lose Kevin. So, she suggested they explore it together.

That’s when Megan, 39, entered the picture. They met her through an app designed to help couples find a third person to bring into their romance. Megan immediately formed a strong connection with both Alana and Kevin.

The three decided to officially enter into a throuple six months later, and have been madly in love ever since.

But being in a relationship with two people at once is certainly not a walk in a park.

The trio spoke exclusively with the Daily Mail about the harsh realities of their dynamic, from how they combat jealousy to judgement from their own family members.

‘I had always found women attractive, but for a long time I wasn’t sure if that was just admiration or something deeper,’ Alana explained.

‘Eventually, I opened up to Kevin about it and told him I wanted to explore that part of myself to understand whether it was more than just appreciation.

‘Because Kevin and I already had such an open and communicative relationship, I wasn’t worried about his reaction.

‘I knew I wouldn’t be judged or shamed for wanting to understand myself better. And he was very supportive and genuinely curious.’

Kevin recalled feeling ‘grateful’ that Alana trusted him enough to be honest about how she was feeling.

‘It was important to me to create a safe space where she felt comfortable talking openly and exploring that part of herself,’ he told the Daily Mail.

At first, they thought it was just going to be an ‘experiment’ or ‘one time thing,’ not a permanent switch. But when they met Megan, the connection was undeniable.

‘After seeing each other multiple times over several months and talking almost every single day, we knew the feelings were very real and very strong,’ Alana explained.

‘Around the six-month mark, it became clear that we wanted more than something casual. We wanted a real relationship together.’

They officially became a throuple in January 2021, but breaking the news to their family members about their three-person relationship wasn’t easy.

‘Kevin’s mom struggled at first,’ Alana said. ‘It was a completely new concept for her, and we understood that.

‘We gave her space and accepted that it might take time to understand.’

Additionally, it wasn’t easy for Megan to join an already well-established relationship.

‘There were definitely aspects that were difficult at first,’ Megan told the Daily Mail. ‘I had never been in this type of relationship before, so everything felt new while Alana and Kevin already had history together.

‘There were moments where I felt left out, not intentionally, but because they shared inside jokes, routines and a comfort that naturally comes from time.

‘I couldn’t rush building that same history with them, and at times it felt like I was trying to catch up.’

But their love for one another ultimately prevailed and one year into their relationship, Megan moved into their 600sq-ft, one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment.

Navigating living together in such a small space posed a whole new set of challenges, including jealousy.

‘But we made it a priority to communicate immediately when those feelings came up,’ Alana said.

‘Talking things through right away and making sure everyone feels seen and valued has been key.’

Megan added that ‘being able to openly acknowledge jealousy without blame and work through it together helped build trust and made those feelings feel manageable rather than overwhelming.’

Now, six years into their relationship, they have fallen into a great groove. They share a king-size bed and ‘rotate sleeping spots every night’ so that they all get equal time together.

They also have scheduled ‘check ins’ where they can share how they’re ‘feeling and bring up problems as soon as they arise instead of letting anything build up.’

‘When you’re learning a completely new relationship structure, it’s essential to be extremely open about how you’re feeling and to regularly check in with your partners,’ Megan said. ‘You can’t assume anything, you have to talk things through.’

Their families have come around – but they still face immense judgement from strangers on the internet.

They often document their relationship on Instagram and TikTok under the name Camp Throuple, where they’ve racked up hundreds of thousands of followers.

And they admitted that being so public about their relationship means they’re often flooded with negative comments from viewers.

‘About 75 percent of the comments we get are hateful,’ Alana said. ‘People say everything from we are going to hell to this is not a real relationship or that one person must love someone more than the others.

‘In the beginning, it was overwhelming. But over time, we learned to focus on the positive.

‘We also receive countless messages from people telling us how much our openness has helped them, including other throuples from all over the world and people who are not polyamorous at all.

‘Hearing that we have helped others communicate better or feel less alone makes it all worth it.’

The hardest part now? According to Alana, it’s not the backlash or having to share her boyfriend with another woman.

‘Honestly,’ she said, ‘deciding what to eat or what to watch can be surprisingly difficult with three opinions involved.’
