Growing up in the 90s, burgundy was the colour of school uniform – specifically the burgundy jumper and joggers I used to wear all through primary school. In my mind, it was certainly not chic. Fast forward to 2026, however, and burgundy is the fashion colour du jour, seen everywhere from designer front rows to high street windows. Every fashion editor I know is swathed in it. And now it’s coming for our make-up bags too.

Burgundy beauty is having a moment. Case in point, Chanel, which recently revived its iconic 1990s shade Rouge Noir as part of a limited edition colour cosmetics collection.

Its Rouge Noir nail polish was already an iconic beauty product, having supposedly adorned Uma Thurman’s nails in Pulp Fiction and Madonna’s in the music video for Take A Bow. As the name suggests, it’s a red-black shade, apparently created days before Chanel’s autumn/winter 1994-’95 show when the creative directors needed to find a nail polish that would complement the outfits. For 2026 Chanel launched an entire make-up collection based on the original colour, with formulas for the eyes, cheeks and lips – and it has sold out almost instantly.

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Rouge Noir Luminous Matte Lip Colour

Among the products to fly off the shelves was a burgundy lipstick – Rouge Allure Velvet Rouge Noir Luminous Matte Lip Colour – and a mascara and lip gloss in the same shade. It speaks to a wider trend in which burgundy is being recognised for its skin-flattering finish and versatility. Deep, dark red shades are warm, sexy and perfect for livening up the skin in this cold, grey weather. If you missed out on the Chanel collection, here are a few of our favourite products to get the look….
