The New York Giants’ search for an offensive coordinator took an unexpected turn after their top target accepted a head coaching job elsewhere. Now, two coaches with recent ties to the Tennessee Titans have emerged as candidates to lead the offense for quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Ex- Tennessee Titans Coach Brian Callahan, Commanders’ Kliff Kingsbury Interview for New York Giants Offensive Coordinator Job
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Sunday that former Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan and former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury are involved in the Giants’ initial search for an offensive coordinator. According to Fowler, New York “plans to or has talked to them.”
The Giants had expected to hire Todd Monken as their offensive coordinator after bringing in head coach John Harbaugh from the Baltimore Ravens. When Monken accepted the Cleveland Browns head coaching position instead, the Giants pivoted to other candidates.
Both Callahan and Kingsbury bring offensive coordinator experience and brief head coaching tenures to the table. Both also share recent connections to the Titans organization, though under vastly different circumstances. Kingsbury interviewed with the Titans earlier this month.
Callahan’s Short, Unsuccessful Titans Tenure
Callahan lasted less than two full seasons in Tennessee before the organization fired him in October following a 1-5 start. His final record of 4-19 ranks among the worst in franchise history, with the Titans winning just one home game during his tenure.
The Titans hired Callahan in Jan. 2024 after he spent five seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals‘ offensive coordinator. Callahan had never been a primary play-caller in Cincinnati. Tennessee gave him full offensive control, and the results were less than ideal.
Since his firing, Callahan has interviewed for multiple offensive coordinator positions but hasn’t landed a job. The Atlanta Falcons considered him before hiring Tommy Rees, while the Los Angeles Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers also passed on bringing him aboard.
Kingsbury Brings Play-Calling Experience, Mixed Results
Kingsbury’s recent track record presents a more complicated picture. The Commanders hired him last February, and his first season proved successful. Washington went 12-5 with Kingsbury calling plays, and the offense ranked fifth in points scored at 28.5 per game. Quarterback Jayden Daniels won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors under Kingsbury’s guidance.
The 2025 season told a different story. The Commanders stumbled to a 5-12 record as injuries decimated the roster. Daniels played only four full games, and the offense struggled with predictability when healthy players were available. Washington and Kingsbury mutually agreed to part ways in January.
Before his Washington tenure, Kingsbury spent four seasons as Arizona Cardinals head coach from 2019 to 2022, compiling a 28-37-1 record before the Cardinals fired him.
Giants’ Urgent Need for Offensive Leadership
Harbaugh’s major hiring decision will determine how quickly Dart develops in New York’s system. The Giants need an offensive coordinator who can install a functional scheme and provide consistent play-calling after years of offensive struggles.
Callahan offers connections to successful organizations (Cincinnati reached a Super Bowl during his tenure) but carries the baggage of historically poor results as a head coach. Kingsbury brings proven play-calling success and a track record of developing young quarterbacks, though his 2025 struggles in Washington and Cardinals’ firing raise questions about consistency.
