Savannah Guthrie has revealed she felt like a ‘failure’ following her divorce from her first husband.
The Today show co-anchor, 54, was married to former BBC journalist Mark Orchard for four years until their split in 2009.
Reflecting on her heartbreak on the debut episode of Hoda Kotb’s new YouTube series, Joy Rides, Guthrie remembered how the end of her marriage felt like her dreams were ‘falling apart.’
‘I was in my 30s. I felt old, but I now see that I was pretty young, and I was sad about it,’ Guthrie recalled.
‘And I was also starting a new job at a place called NBC and trying really hard to make my way and make my little dream come true while other dreams were falling apart.
‘And it made me have to really dig deep, and I felt like a failure.’
Despite her heartbreak, the split helped Guthrie form a closer connection with her faith.
‘I realized I didn’t have to be perfect to be loved by God,’ she continued. ‘I didn’t even have to be close because I was definitely a failure.

The Today show anchor was married to former BBC journalist Mark Orchard from 2005 to 2009
‘And I really felt loved and carried by God, and that was such an important, integral moment of life.’
Guthrie previously said that her divorce from Orchard took her ‘years to recover.’
During an appearance on Monica Lewinsky’s podcast Reclaiming in 2025, she described the split as ‘horrible’ and ‘sad.’
‘I’m not blaming anyone but I don’t really want to get into it,’ she added. ‘It’s the one thing I didn’t want to talk about.’
Guthrie avoided writing about the split in her 2024 book Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere because she felt like divulging details was ‘too personal’ and ‘too embarrassing.’
NBC broadcaster Guthrie is now married to public relations and communications consultant Michael Feldman.
The pair – who share daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, nine – initially began dating in 2009 before tying the knot in Guthrie’s hometown of Tucson, Arizona in 2014.
The journalist met the former Democratic political adviser at his 40th birthday party which she ‘crashed,’ attending as her gal pal’s plus one.
Speaking to friend and former co-star Hoda Kotb, Guthrie said the divorce made her ‘have to really dig deep’

She and Feldman hit it off and they began dating after he sent her an email ‘a few days later.’
Guthrie has been absent from the Today show since mid-December after being forced to take time off to undergo a procedure to remove a nodules and a polyp from her vocal cords.
Since then, she has sporadically appeared on the morning show from home to give updates but has been on vocal rest.
Earlier this week, she spoke for the first time on air since going under the knife, and her co-hosts were stunned over her ‘new voice.’
‘So, I am still on vocal rest, but I’m allowed to talk for about five to ten minutes every hour,’ Guthrie explained.
‘This is my new voice, or my old voice, but my new voice,’ she said.
Immediately, her co-stars shared their excitement.
‘Savannah, you sound so good!’ Sheinelle Jones gushed.
‘It’s beautiful,’ Jenna Bush Hager agreed.
Al Roker, however, quipped: ‘It sounds the same,’ as Craig Melvin disagreed: ‘No it sounds… you sound markedly better.’
