Ryan Kelly #78 of the Minnesota Vikings warms up before a game against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Minnesota Vikings already had a lot on their plate heading into the 2026 offseason, with a change in the front office preceding what will be an active offseason, particularly for a roster that is in flux and faces even more turmoil following the news on Ryan Kelly.

Kelly is coming off his first year with the Vikings.

The 2025 campaign was trying for Kelly, aformer draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts, enough to force a significant career decision.

Vikings’ Ryan Kelly Makes Major Announcement

The Vikings signed Kelly in free agency during the 2025 offseason, overhauling their offensive and defensive lines for then-second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Like McCarthy, though, Kelly battled injuries throughout the season.

Unlike McCarthy, who faces tremendous uncertainty regarding his future but is still 23 years old, Kelly, a 32-year-old four-time Pro Bowler, has already accomplished plenty in his career. That reality, plus his unfortunate injury history, has left Kelly to announce his retirement.

“10 seasons,” Kelly began his post on X on March 6. “What an incredible ride it was. I was blessed to be around some of the greatest people this sport has to offer. I always wanted to leave each place better than how I found it and with that I can hang my hat. Forever grateful for my family and brothers! Cheers.”

Kelly had much more to say in a lengthy post on Instagram.

Ryan Kelly posted a longer version of his retirement message on IG.

Kelly’s decision is significant, drawing attention from multiple national reporters as well as locally.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert called it a “disappointing but expected outcome for a really good man.”

Kelly was the 18th overall pick of the 2018 draft by the Colts. He started all 121 of the games that he played in a Colts uniform.

Kelly started eight games during what was officially his lone season in Minnesota.

The Vikings signed Kelly to a two-year, $18 million contract. He walks away with an eight-year career, multiple accolades, and $79.3 million in career earnings. There is a financial component at play for the Vikings, too, after they entered the offseason deep in the red.

For Kelly, the decision comes after multiple concussions, including three during the 2025 season with the Vikings.

Vikings Continue to Undue Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s Plan

Kelly’s retirement is the latest one of former Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s plans from the 2025 offseason that are set to change for 2026.

In addition to firing Adofo-Mensah, the Vikings will also move on from defensive tackles Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen, both of whom signed lucrative deals last offseason. They were part of the Vikings roster overhaul in the trenches, along with Kelly.

Fellow 2025 free agent Will Fries and first-round pick Donovan Jackson are the only ones left.

Even McCarthy, whom the Vikings keyed their planning around–including not bringing in a more proven veteran to at least push the young QB–could be on his way out.

The Vikings still have plenty of work to do, and they still want to field a competitive roster in 2026. That becomes more difficult to forecast with each additional departure from an already-flawed roster.

Even if the Vikings foresaw Kelly’s retirement, they are now pressed to replace him.
