The goal for Major League Baseball front offices at the deadline is to scout and acquire talented players who can help the organization, either now or in the future.
Aside from All-Stars and rising prospects, general managers often look for players who still have the potential to produce on both sides of the ball or the mound. Although they may be a few years removed from their prime, they maintain a skill set that can help their new team.
The New York Yankees are reportedly one of the teams interested in acquiring Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, who is labeled a “buy-low” trade candidate by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter.
Rockies’ Previous Hesitancy in Trading McMahon
The Colorado Rockies held on to McMahon last season, hoping he would be a key piece of a slow rebuild. Instead, Colorado is 21-70 and on pace to have one of the worst win-loss records in MLB history.
McMahon has two years and $32 million remaining on his contract, which may improve the trade package the Rockies receive in return for the 2024 All-Star.
“Ryan McMahon looked like a valuable potential trade chip at this time last year, as he was on his way to his first career All-Star selection while hitting .272/.350/.447 with 14 home runs and 45 RBI,” Reuter wrote on Friday.
“The also-ran Rockies instead opted against fielding offers for him at the deadline, then watched his value crater as he hit .188/.283/.309 over 237 plate appearances during the second half of the season.”
McMahon’s trade stock has not significantly risen in 2025, as he’s hitting .213/.314/.377 with a .691 OPS and 12 home runs in 89 games. The slugger hit a career-high 24 home runs in 2019. He remains a steady defender, accumulating three outs above average at third base this year.
Will the Yankees Target McMahon in a Trade?
If the Colorado Rockies decide to float McMahon’s name in trade discussions, the New York Yankees could be one of the teams interested. However, that’s a major if.
“With two years remaining on his six-year, $70 million deal, McMahon remains a logical trade candidate for the Rockies, though there’s rarely any logic in play when it comes to the Colorado front office,” wrote Reuter.
The Yankees are in obvious need of a third baseman, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports they are also “keeping a close eye” on Isiah Kiner-Falefa of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
While Suarez hits for more power than Kiner-Falefa, the Pirates’ utility man brings more versatility on defense. In McMahon’s case, he’s just one season removed from an All-Star appearance and should be cheaper to acquire than Suarez, one of the hottest names on the trade rumor mill.
Additionally, Suarez will reach free agency at the end of the season, while McMahon remains under club control through 2027.
Trade Package
If the New York Yankees propose a trade for McMahon to the Colorado Rockies, they may get away with shipping out only one of their top prospects, packaged with lower-level minor leaguers.
George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones are too highly rated to be involved in a deal like this, making players like outfielder Everson Pereira or left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge more realistic candidates.
