Hange and Eren from Attack On Titan

Hajime Isayama’s Attack On Titan is filled to the brim with incredibly strong-willed characters who know themselves and what they’ve decided to stand for, even if it means other characters hate them for it. There are a handful of characters who feel like just about everyone’s fan-favorite, while others commit such heinous acts that they end up completely irredeemable.

However, most of thecast gets enough development throughout Attack On Titan‘sfour-season run that they end up somewhere in the middle. There are fans who are able to understand and side with these characters, falling in love with their better attributes, while others are unable to look past a bad first impression or a dark, downwards twist in their character.

This article may contain spoilers for those who have not finished the Attack On Titan manga.

10 Eren Is One Of The Series’ Most Controversial Characters

Although Eren can act rashly and let his emotions get the better of him at the start of Attack On Titan, he’s still a mostly-beloved character. After all, he’s the series’ protagonist, and fans witness the traumatic loss of his mother, which truly catapults him onto the path of revenge.

As time goes on, though, Eren becomes more and more of a divisive character, as he ends up taking radical action in the name of his beliefs. And while there are those who can understand his descent into villainy and still adore his character, there are others who simply can’t forgive him for what he’s done.

9 Mikasa’s Character Revolves Too Much Around Eren For Many

Mikasa is one of the best and brightest of her squad, easily earning the number one spot in her Training Division. Many fans adore her for her cool personality, as well as how devoted she is to making sure Eren feel safe, as he’s the last remaining family member that Mikasa has left.

However, it’s this very devotion that also causes many to dislike Mikasa. From their point of view, she’s too dependent on Eren for her character growth, and there should have been more of an effort to make Mikasa more independent.

8 Many Feel That Levi’s Number One Title Is Undeserved

No other character in Attack On Titan explodes in popularity after their initial appearance the way that Levi does. He stylishly slices through two Titans like it’s nothing, and many fall for his cold demeanor, as it’s obvious he has the skills to back it up.

It’s actually precisely because of how overly adored Levi is by most of the fanbase that others have come to dislike his character. Many can’t agree with a character who has such a sour personality on the surface receiving so much praise.

7 Annie’s Role As The Female Titan Earns Her Both Intrigue & Ire

Annie’s role as the Female Titan causes her to be a rather controversial character. While it’s true that she does spare the lives of cadets she recognizes, such as Armin, she’s still responsible for a ton of death and destruction while attempting to retrieve Eren.

After Annie’s captured and throughout the period that follows, it’s her budding relationship with Armin that helps to humanize her and earns her fans. She begins working together with others in order to stop Eren and even admits that many of her actions are heinous — but of course, there are still those who refuse to forgive her.

6 Erwin’s Dismissal Of Others In Favor Of His Dreams Rubs Some The Wrong Way

Erwin’s ultimate sacrifice is one of the most emotional moments in the later part of the series. He’s able to abandon his selfish dreams and charges onto the front line alongside his men, effectively letting them know that humanity’s survival overall had become more important to him.

Many fans are unable to forgive him for his previous behavior, though, and it’s understandable why. Erwin is originally much more concerned with himself and his personal dreams than the Survey Corps’ ultimate goal, and acts quite selfishly because of this.

5 Armin Goes Against His Original, Non-Violent Ways

Originally, Armin is a character who highly prefers talking things out or devising strategies for his comrades rather than taking an offensive position on the front lines. This doesn’t mean he can’t hold his own against Titans if he has to, but the Armin at the start of the series would never imagine hurting another human.

This all changes near the end of the series, though, when Armin transforms into the Colossal Titan and causes hundreds of casualties, many of them civilians. While many are still able to love Armin for his overall character throughout the series, others can’t look past the betrayal of his own values.

4 Some Can’t Help But Empathize With Reiner’s Struggles

A majority of fans harbor intense negative feelings about Reiner, and it’s not hard to understand why. After all, it’s Reiner who smashes Shiganshina’s walls and lets Titans overrun the city, and it’s Reiner who makes the call to strip Marco of his gear and leave him for dead.

Despite all of this, though, there are others who can’t help but empathize with Reiner’s struggles. He’s shown to suffer from horrendous nightmares as well as guilt over what he’s done, going as far as to beg Eren to end his life.

3 Gabi Starts Out Universally Hated But Improves With Time

It’s safe to say that Gabi becomes the quickest universally hated character in all of Attack On Titan soon after her first appearance. Not only does she have a domineering, condescending personality, but she’s responsible for the death of fan-favorite Sasha Braus.

She develops over the course of the series’ final arc, though, and is able to see that her view of Paradis’ people is entirely built on misinformation. She drops her hatred and her condescension, almost entirely, and ends up putting her life on the line to help fight back against Eren. These actions are enough to redeem Gabi for some fans, but others will never be able to forgive her.

2 It’s Hard For Everyone To Look Past Hange’s Eccentric Introduction

Many fans warm up to Hange over time, as her analytical brilliance is given opportunities to shine through. She’s also shown to be a highly sympathetic character who cares deeply about her comrades and is able to relate to Mikasa’s feelings of loss and helplessness, hugging her in order to console her.

However, Hange makes one of the strongest first impressions — and this isn’t considered a good thing to some. Hange’s intense fascination with Titans is overwhelming for some fans, and others fear her darker, more violent side that comes out on occasion.

1 Ymir Is Caught Between Her Duty & Her Relationship

Early on, Ymir is shown to be a capable character who fits in well with the other cadets. Many fans adore her relationship with Historia, and are hopeful that as things move forward, Ymir will defy her destiny and instead side with the heroes and the girl she loves.

It even seems like this might be the case, as she goes against orders in order to make sure Historia is safe, but she returns to the enemy afterward. It’s a move that frustrates the fans who weren’t already sold on her character and leaves many wishing that she could have met a different fate.
