10 The Green Goblin Was A Murderous Monster (Spider-Man)

Many people decry the Green Goblin’s costume in Spider-Man. However, Sam Raimi’s history of blending silliness and horror helped make the Green Goblin a terrifying villain. The Green Goblin costume may look silly, but Spider-Man’s directing and cinematography emphasized the Green Goblin’s scary features, such as his “horrible yellow eyes.”

Viewers also got to see more of the Green Goblin’s human face in Spider-Man: No Way Home, seeing the full extent of the villain’s cruelty and twisted smile. The Green Goblin took great pleasure in killing people, terrifying many viewers who couldn’t imagine what his murderous limits truly were.

8 The Lizard Nearly Had Spider-Man Underwater (The Amazing Spider-Man)

Although The Amazing Spider-Man franchise doesn’t have the same horror feel as the Raimi Trilogy, Marc Webb and the creative team did a great job making the Lizard a fearsome opponent. Several scenes show Doctor Connors’ deteriorating mind and increasingly threatening nature.

Even when Doctor Connors wasn’t currently the Lizard, his animalistic instincts were taking control. Doctor Connors became unsettling, and even his friend, Peter Parker, became scared of him. The movie also put a spotlight on the Lizard’s massive strength and size, showing how capable he was of killing or potentially eating anybody.

7 The Venom Symbiote Crept Up To Peter While He Was Sleeping (Spider-Man 3)

Being asleep is one of the most vulnerable states someone can be in. In Spider-Man 3, Peter Parker slept when the monstrous Venom symbiote started creeping up on him.

Thanks to Spider-Man 3’s creative team, the film emphasized the symbiote’s unsettling nature. Sam Raimi and the animators used shadows and shape-shifting to make the symbiote appear like a night monster ready to consume its prey. The symbiote could make one’s skin crawl and make children ponder if there’s a monster lurking about in their room.

6 Flint Marko Screamed As His Body Turned Into Sand (Spider-Man 3)

Although people praise the sad scene of the Sandman first trying to take human form, there is a scarier scene that gets overlooked. The scene of Flint Marko turning into the Sandman is a great example of body horror.

But the real horror is when Flint starts screaming; his painful screams run through viewers’ ears, but no one in the real world can hear him.

5 Vulture Realized That Peter Was Spider-Man When They Were Going To His School (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

The most memorable scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming is when Peter Parker is inside a car with Adrian Toomes, his enemy, the Vulture. The scene relies on subtext and psychological tension to build worry within the audience.

Peter tried to keep cool and avoid giving Adrian hints that he was Spider-Man. Unfortunately, Adrian’s daughter, Liz Allan, was also there and unintentionally kept clueing in that Peter was Spider-Man. The scene builds up dread inside Peter and the audience, and when Vulture finally figures out Peter’s secret, scary possibilities play in the viewers’ minds. Vulture best said it plainly: “I’ll kill you and everybody you love.

4 Gwen Stacy’s Death Haunts Peter Parker (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 loosely adapted “The Night Gwen Stacy Died,” killing off Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. Spider-Man failed to save her, resulting in her head brutally slamming onto the ground at a rapid speed.

Gwen’s death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 used people’s natural fear of heights to empathize with the danger Gwen was in. Gwen’s death left a haunting atmosphere in both Peter Parker and the audience, carrying onto Spider-Man: No Way Home. Gwen’s death had an eerie sense of realism and tragedy, which likely hit close to home for many people who lost their loved ones in tragic accidents.

Mysterio kept rubbing in Peter’s “inability” to be a proper hero, placing the blame on Peter for Tony Stark’s death. The scariest moment is when Mysterio forces Peter to see Tony’s zombified corpse, which really gives a sense of doom as it reminds everyone that Spider-Man is on his own.

2 Venom Was Spider-Man’s Toughest Opponent (Spider-Man 3)

Although Venom’s look in Spider-Man 3 disappointed many fans, the character was still frightening. His appearance was a twisted, monstrous version of Spider-Man that could give anyone a good scare. Spider-Man 3’s versions of Eddie Brock and the symbiote created another scary version of Venom, one worthy of the big screen.

Venom in Spider-Man 3 was the Web-Head’s most dangerous opponent; he had all of Spider-Man’s powers, knew his secret identity, and was immune to his spider-sense. Adding to Eddie Brock’s threat level, he could not properly connect to others and refused to take responsibility for his mistakes. With his newfound power as Venom, it was dreadful imagining how far he would take his vengeful personality against people.

Throughout The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Harry gradually became unhinged as his disease brought him closer to death. Harry ultimately took a dangerous serum, which gave him a painful transformation into the Green Goblin. The scene’s cinematography accentuates Harry’s pain and twisted self; the shots are unfocused, and Harry’s body contorts unnaturally. Throughout it all, Harry screamed and struggled to stay alive. It is a horrifying scene that illustrates Harry Osborn’s end and the Green Goblin’s birth.
