Ryan Gosling’s opening monologue was humorously crashed by an A-list pop star as he took on hosting duties during the latest Saturday Night Live episode.

The 45-year-old actor – who is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Project Hail Mary – was only seconds into his speech when he was immediately distracted by a familiar face in the crowd that belonged to none other than singer Harry Styles.

‘I’m thrilled to be back hosting, especially now. This is the perfect time to be in New York City. Early March,’ he began.

Following a quick round of applause from the crowd, Gosling added, ‘Right? No, it’s beautiful.’

His gaze then drifted over to his right and before he could continue his monologue, Gosling pointed forward in confusion.

‘Is that Harry Styles?’ he asked. The camera cut to Styles sitting calmly in a chair near the front row, causing the audience to erupt into loud cheers.

The former One Direction member looked around with a small smile as Gosling kept pointing in disbelief.

‘Uh, what are you doing here, man?’ The Notebook star questioned.

The singer explained, ‘Well, I’m hosting next week. And it’s been a while so I wanted to watch, get a feel for it.’

‘God, that’s so professional. That’s awesome,’ Gosling replied, ‘You’re here. I just wish someone would have told me. Anyway. Welcome.’

The actor jumped back into his monologue and jokingly said, ‘I have a new movie coming out. It’s called Project Harry Styles.’

He quickly corrected himself as he explained that Project Hail Mary has been compared to beloved movies such as E.T. and Interstellar.

‘Which is crazy, because those are like, what, two of the best films of all-time? Kind of like saying it’s like, what, double that?’

Gosling added, ‘I don’t know. I didn’t say it. I just – I’ve always loved making films about space. There’s just something about them that gives me perspective.’

Gosling then talked about the importance of Earth in an emotional speech as instrumental music played in the background.

A globe dropped down next to him but as he spoke, the camera cut to Styles as he nodded while pretending to seriously take in what the actor was saying.

‘I’m sorry, why are we on Harry Styles?’ Gosling asked, abruptly halting his monologue once again.

‘I don’t know, I’m just listening,’ the British-born singer explained, which prompted the actor to ask, ‘Well, can you listen less cool? Like, your coolness is becoming a bit of an issue.’

Gosling then resumed his emotional speech but after only a few sentences in, the camera jumped to a split screen to show both the actor and Styles.

‘What’s going on? I’m just trying to understand why we’d be in a split screen?’ the Barbie star questioned. ‘Come on, guys, let’s get rid of the split screen.’

The split screen disappeared and only showed Styles instead of Gosling.

The actor demanded to know what was happening with camera two and it was revealed the camera operator was wearing an ‘I [heart] Harry’ shirt.

A bit defeated, Gosling decided to no longer do a big dance number that had been planned.

He then referenced to his Project Hail Mary co-star Sandra Huller who sings Sign Of The Times by Styles in the sci-fi movie.

‘In the movie, there’s this song. It’s a karaoke sang. Sandra Huller sings it. It’s very poignant and the anthem of our generation. Some have said it’s called Sign Of The Times and oh my God, it’s by Harry Styles!’

As Gosling sang some of the lyrics, the singer also appeared on the screen once again which caused the actor to stop singing.

The star sat down on the stage after also failing to sing his I’m Just Ken track from the Barbie movie. SNL comedian Mikey Day went over to comfort Gosling by planting a kiss on his cheek.

The actor started to laugh and noticed that most of the entire SNL cast had also joined him on stage.

‘You guys all came to help me? Because I’m, like, your favorite host of all time?’ he asked with hope. But they admitted that they only wanted ‘to get a better look at Harry.’

Styles waved to the cast before they all belted out more lyrics to Sign Of The Times, which concluded the opening monologue.
