A Sign of Affection is one of the most highly-anticipated romance anime of 2024, and also one of the healthiest.

A Sign of Affection tells the story of a deaf college girl named Yuki. Defying societal norms and refusing to let her disability dictate her life, Yuki tries to live her life as normally as possible. At first glance, the audience may think that Yuki’s deafness would more or less feel like background noise and the romance would take center stage. However, A Sign of Affection beautifully unfolds the tiny details and problems that Yuki has to face in her day-to-day activities, and that’s exactly how she met Itsuomi. Yuki lands herself in an awkward situation with a tourist who asks her for directions. Naturally, Yuki is flustered by the obvious absence of communication, and that’s when a handsome stranger comes to her rescue. The scene impressively delivers one of the show’s goals, which is to subtly point out the challenges of a young deaf girl who doesn’t like to be reminded of her shortcomings.

Shortly after meeting Itsuomi, Yuki finds out that the white-haired prince is an upperclassman in her college and a good friend of her best friend, Rin. Although not immediately, Yuki somehow becomes completely spellbound by Itsuomi’s presence and easygoing attitude. Despite meeting her once, Itsuomi was one of the few people who weren’t taken aback or overwhelmed by her condition. He didn’t treat her any differently; instead, his attitude was both curious and gentle towards her. From then on, Yuki develops a crush on Itsuomi and starts to experience a slow invasion of feelings and romantic tension she never thought she could ever get the chance to feel. The anime quite literally portrays her expanding universe and the blend of color in her space, which was pretty monotonous before she met Itsuomi.

After that, the show mostly focuses on Yuki’s romantic journey as she finds the courage to let herself fall in love. She dares to step out of her comfort zone and become infatuated with a guy who doesn’t even know sign language. Instead of second-guessing herself, Yuki takes up every opportunity that would bring her close to Itsuomi and convey her feelings. On the other hand, the gorgeous cultural student also got pulled into Yuki’s gravity. It would seem at first that Itsuomi was initially drawn to Yuki out of curiosity and his passion for learning different languages. However, as he got to know her, Itsuomi’s feelings eventually evolved into love as he found Yuki’s innocence endearing and her perspective extremely mesmerizing and new. A Sign of Affection is a love story from a deaf girl’s point of view and how the arrival of a person changed the way she saw her world and herself.

Who Are the Main Characters in the Anime?

The Anime Revolves Around Several Characters Tangled In a Web of Love

Yuki and Itsuomi are introduced as two college students with a mutual friend. Going to college is Yuki’s first experience outside of special institutions for people like her. Despite being beautiful and compelling, not everyone can tell that Yuki is deaf. On the other hand, Itsuomi is a pretty-faced, multilingual 22-year-old student who often travels abroad as a member of the cultural club. Itsuomi was brought up in Germany, and his experience growing up in a foreign country fueled his passion for traveling the world and learning different languages so he could spread the seeds of his personal experiences and teachings everywhere he went. Besides the main couple, Yuki’s best friend Rin and Itsuomi’s older cousin Kyoya also receive a generous amount of time in the spotlight. Rin’s eventual advances toward Kyoya inspire Yuki to do the same, and fortunately for both of them, they end up dating two complete gentlemen. By the end of the anime, all four of them somehow find the courage to confront their feelings and give the kind of person a chance who has come to like them first.

Of course, as a rule of thumb for all romance anime, there’s bound to be a third wheel who is either in love with the hero or the heroine. In this case, it’s Yuki’s childhood friend Oshi, who gets the short end of the stick by being the clichéd childhood friend who gets rejected. However, there’s more to the trio’s relationship than just a trope-infested love triangle. Despite Oshi’s feelings for Yuki, he never really mustered up the courage or the right attitude to make Yuki see him as a romantic partner. Although he’s the only guy who knows sign language in Yuki’s vicinity, he didn’t really plan anything that would make Yuki consider him as an option. Oshi is that hot-headed romance option who hates someone else dating the girl he likes but wouldn’t make an effort to step up to the role.

Surprisingly, there’s another third wheel in the picture, who is quite the opposite of Oshi. Emma is Itsuomi’s high school friend who hopelessly fell in love with him the moment she saw him. From then on, Emma had tried to openly convey her feelings to Itsuomi despite the latter not entertaining her request, not even for a second. Itsuomi is clear about their relationship status, but Emma has a hard time accepting Istuomi’s rejection and thus chases him throughout the series until she learns about his relationship with Yuki.

My Dress-Up Darling is one of the best modern romance anime, but is it just high on anime wish fulfillment, or does it offer more?

A Sign of Affection isn’t perfect, nor is it an over-dramatization of young love. The anime finds balance in its attempt at being a light romance watch and a story that tackles sensitive themes with adult characters. There are a few inconsistencies in the anime where Yuki’s deafness is concerned, but nothing too harsh or obvious to ruin the magic of the story. The anime is a true swoon-worthy tale that makes viewer’s hearts flutter. Viewers can’t help but root for Yuki and Itsuomi and hope that their unique relationship works out for the better.

One of the best things A Sign of Affection does is steer clear of melodrama and unnecessarily extend the plot. Thankfully, the anime shows Yuki and Itsuomi’s progressive relationship early on, despite the popular trend of having the main couple come together in the last episode. It’s safe to say that besides the obvious romantic elements, there’s something very calming and light-hearted about A Sign of Affection. It’s an incredibly wholesome and cozy watch that enhances and elevates the magic of being in love.

A Sign of Affection is a beautiful depiction of hope and innocence, and Yuki’s character is the perfect representation of these attributes. Her character was handled superbly, and her point of view completely transformed the tone of the series. The audience is led to feel the love more intensely through her, as every little feeling she gets from Itsuomi is like a terraforming experience in her world. From paying great attention to detail and aesthetically pleasing visuals, A Sign of Affection is a romance anime to look out for, especially for viewers who want to step out of the high school zone.
