Aaron Judge hit his 61st home run of the season against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday

Aaron Judge has FINALLY done it! The Yankees hero ties Roger Maris on 61 homers with a huge hit against the Blue Jays and is now ONE off the AL record

  • Aaron Judge is on verge of making history after hitting his 61st homer of season
  • New York Yankees star needs one more home run to break AL and team record
  • His 61st against Toronto Blue Jays tied him with the legendary Roger Maris

Aaron Judge is within touching distance of creating history after finally striking his 61st homer of the season.

The New York Yankees star has been in unstoppable form this season and is on the verge of breaking the American League and team’s home run record.

His hit in the seventh inning against the Toronto Blue Jays moved him level with Bronx legend Roger Maris. Incredibly, it was his 34th plate appearance after hitting his 60th home run.

Judge surpassed another baseball legend in Babe Ruth when he produced his 60th homer of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 20, but it’s been a bit of a wait for his 61st. He had gone seven games without a home run.

Maris previously held both the AL and Yankees record, set in 1961, one ahead of Ruth’s regular-season record of 60 from 1927.

And in a poignant moment, Judge’s mom was sat next to son of Maris as the Yankees hero moved shoulder to shoulder with Maris in baseball history.

As Judge made his way round the bases, he pointed to his ecstatic Yankees team who were going wild in celebration.

Remarkably, nobody caught the home run ball. It hit a wall in the stands and fell into a gap between the stands and the pitch. A Yankees staff member managed to retrieve it for Judge to keep.

He is also in contention to win the Triple Crown as he’s out on his own for RBIs and batting average. If he went on to achieve the feat he would be the first Yankee to win the elusive title since Mickey Mantle 66 years ago.

Since connecting for No. 60 against Pittsburgh last week to spark a ninth-inning comeback, the four-time All-Star was 5 for 18 with three doubles, eight walks and eight strikeouts.

The closest he’d come to matching Maris’ 1961 mark was a 404-foot drive caught right in front of the center field fence Thursday.

Pirates pitcher Eric Stout was blasted by Yankees fans as ‘the biggest coward in baseball’ after he walked Judge in the eighth inning after his team rallied to get him to the plate in bid to tie Maris on 61 home runs last Wednesday.

Judge then fumed at the umpire after his close check swing call against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday and then the final game of the series was called after a 98-minute delay, sending Judge on the road to chase Maris in Toronto this week.

Judge was drafted by the Yankees minor league in 2013, and he then signed a $1.8million contract, however he suffered from an injury and wasn’t able to participate that season.

He played for the Yankees minor leagues from 2014 until 2016, when he was promoted to the major leagues.

During his 2017 rookie season, he broke many records – he hit a home run with the fastest exit velocity in history at the time and earned recognition for hitting the longest home run of the season.

By 2019, he became the third-fastest MLB player to hit 100 home runs and had the highest exit velocity average of the entire major leaguers, at 95.9mph.

Judge rejected a seven-year, $213.5million extension offer from New York before the season and is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

After struggling with injuries from 2019-20 and failing to recapture the form of his 52-home run rookie season, Judge had a strong 2021 and ultimately chose to play out his contract after deeming the Yankees’ offer too low.

Judge is now reportedly in line to command a $300m contract in free agency.
