Supermarket wars:Amazon Fresh coming to Monmouth, and its technology could shake up supermarkets

In Monmouth and Ocean counties, Aldi has plans to move into a 21,000-square-foot vacant store at the Freehold Mall on Route 9. Now under new ownership, plans call for additional retailers, including AutoZone, and a new façade.

A developer also has started to prepare for construction of a 20,000-square-foot Aldi market on Route 70, near Brick Boulevard, in Brick. Brick Mayor John Ducey said Aldi will move from its current store at the Shops at Brick shopping center, on Route 70 and Van Zile Road, to the new location.

The site of a former Foodtown supermarket and vacant for 20 years, Aldi is part of a larger redevelopment plan.

Besides Aldi, plans for the Brick property also call for a restaurant with liquor license and a building that could be a bank or small store.

The property also will be home to a sports dome with about 60,000 square feet of indoor turf and a three-lane running track. The facility will also have locker rooms, a full-service daycare center, pickleball courts, regulation-size basketball courts, outdoor sand volleyball courts and an outdoor track.

Known for its small stores, Aldi has about 12,000 square feet of retail space divided into five aisles. More than 90% of the groceries sold are under Aldi’s exclusive brands, which the grocer says will help customers save up to 50% on their grocery bill.

The new Toms River store will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. The store will give out eco-friendly bags to shoppers.
