Amanda Holden has revealed that she was encouraged to steal food when she was a child as her family struggled financially while on holiday.

Speaking on Alan Carr’s Life’s a Beach holiday podcast, the Britain’s Got Talent judge, 51, recalled a time when her mum Judith told her and sister Debbie to swipe cereal from the breakfast queue as they’d ran out of money to eat.

Looking back on the moment, Amanda, who is now a successful TV, music and radio star, told how her mother informed her if she wanted ‘any breakfast you’ll have to steal it.’

Discussing the moment with Alan, Amanda said: ‘We’d spent all our money on holiday and we came back on a ferry and my mum told me to go and nick milk and Sugar Puffs from the breakfast queue.

‘She said to me, ‘Amanda if you want any breakfast you’ll have to steal it’.’

The Heart FM radio star then joked: ‘My mum will kill me for admitting this.’

During the same podcast chat on Monday, Amanda also expressed her anger at having to pay £2,500 for Covid tests to cover her family when they took a trip to Portugal earlier this year.

The TV personality added that is fortunate in that she could afford to splash out on the private tests.

However, she told Alan that she believes other Brits, who aren’t as lucky, are being taken advantage of.

She said: ‘We went from the Friday to the Friday, but getting there cost over £2,500 in tests, which I don’t want to rant on and on about it, but I think that is taking advantage of the British public.

‘I’m in a position where I can afford to chuck that money. It’s a huge amount of money – someone’s taking the p**s.

‘If I’d chose to, I could have got in a queue at Faro airport and got one for 25 Euros, but I probably would have caught Covid as well, because the queue was round the block.’

Amanda said that she and her family had managed to return from Portugal before it was switched from the green to the amber list on June 8.

When asked whether she believes it was worth paying the £2,500 it cost her for tests, Amanda told Alan: ‘It was worth it in the sense that we got away as a family, because so many other people didn’t get away.

‘But never again am I paying that sort of money. There should be some sort of inquiry into that.’

She then turned her attention onto her confusion about Government guidance surrounding the pandemic.

She said: ‘None of it makes any sense. I’ve so much goodwill and I’ve abided by every flippin’ rule, but now I’ve gone ‘no more’.

Making a stand: She also told Alan that she believes other Brits, who aren't as lucky, are being taken advantage of

‘I feel like we need to stand together now. Wimbledon, Ascot, football, anywhere there’s money needed, but I can’t go to my own kids’ sports days which are outside, but Wimbledon can happen, the football can happen.

‘My children were so disappointed.’

Portugal is one of the countries that the Government has placed on their amber list for travel restrictions.

As such, anybody that travels back to the UK from a country on the amber list must take a Covid test before leaving for the UK, book and pay for day 2 and day 8 COVID-19 travel tests, and complete a passenger locator form.
