Amber Heard Aquaman

A testimony given during the ongoing defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp has spoiled a significant plot point in Warner Bros. and DC’s film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

As reported by The Direct, entertainment industry consultant Kathryn Arnold’s testimony during the trial revealed significant information regarding Heard’s role in the upcoming DC Extended Universe sequel. “They had [Mera] in the hospital very shortly in the first part of the movie called Act One,” Arnold said. “They had her in the hospital and they pretty much had her in the hospital and then she was going to do this action sequence in the end.” She continued, “I believe that in the first act of the movie, she was injured somehow… or has something to do with the baby.”

While it was reported in April that Lost Kingdom would introduce the son of Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Heard) to the DCEU, those reports remained unconfirmed. According to those reports, the young child, known as Aquababy in DC Comics, would play a significant role in the sequel. Created by Nick Cardy, Arthur Curry Jr./Aquababy debuted in Aquaman #23 in 1965.

This is not the first time that Heard’s involvement in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been brought up during the defamation trial between Heard and her ex-husband, Depp. Heard, who first portrayed Mera in 2018’s Aquaman, recently stated that she “fought” with Warner Bros. to maintain her role in the sequel. “They didn’t want to include me in the film,” she said. While Heard will appear in the film as Mera, she described it as a “very pared down version of that role.”

“I was given a script,” she said. “Then given new versions of the script that had taken away scenes that had action in it, that depicted my character and another character, without giving any spoilers away. Two characters fighting with one another. They basically took a bunch out of my role. They just removed a bunch.”

During his testimony at the trial, DC Films President Walter Hamada confirmed that the studio considered recasting Heard in Lost Kingdom. However, this was not due to the abuse allegations filed by Depp, but because of concerns over the lack of chemistry between her and Momoa. “Editorially they were able to make that relationship work in the first movie, but there was a concern that it took a lot of effort to get there,” he said. Hamada also testified that Warner Bros. had not altered Heard’s role in the film.

In December 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post wherein she recounted her experiences with domestic abuse. Depp filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard in March 2019 claiming that she lied in her piece; Heard filed a $100 million countersuit against Depp for defamation as well. During the trial, Heard has recounted experiences of alleged physical abuse and sexual assault during her marriage to Depp.

The legal battle between Depp and Heard is ongoing and is expected to end on May 27.
