Doug did not make it to Top 20 on his season of the hit series, but he charmed the judges during his audition with his unassuming nature, work-callused hands and lack of performing experience.

He said he was auditioning for his then-two-year-old daughter Eliana, wanting to show her that ‘if you put your mind to it, there’s nothing you can’t do.’

At first, Doug sang the wrong song, but he quickly corrected to the right one: a performance of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

The crowd clapped for him, but he had trouble staying in the right key and was sent home.

Backstage, Doug called a friend, and said, ‘I think I did pretty well for it being my first time.’

After finishing his time on the program, he got his noticeable jagged smile fixed, and returned for the finale to perform Bless The Broken Road with country trio Rascal Flatts.

During the episode, he said he’d grown to believe in himself enough to sing in front of other people, adding, ‘I’m about to go do somebody’s birthday party, through my video channel, due to the COVID-19.’
