Cassie, Ant Man, and Hope in Quantumania

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Kathryn Newton teases Cassie Lang’s growth as a hero and a potential face-off with Kang the Conqueror.

Kathryn Newton, star of Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, teases Cassie Lang’s own hero’s journey in the upcoming film.

Quantumania will be Newton’s MCU debut as Cassie Lang, the teenage daughter of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/Ant-Man. In an interview with Fandango, Newton discussed the type of hero Cassie wants to be and teased an inevitable face-off between her and Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror. “She has no idea what she’s doing,” Newton said. “Cassie Lang has no idea what she’s doing. She wants to be a hero, and she’s face to face with the biggest supervillain of all time. It’s just — she’s gonna learn some lessons.”

Newton went on to describe her MCU character as “impatient” and “a mess,” echoing comments she made about Cassie Lang in November 2022. “She’s not ready, but she thinks she is,” Newton told Fandango. “[…] she doesn’t understand what it means to be a hero. She doesn’t understand what it’s like to deal with a villain. Now, she’s face-to-face with Kang and she’s gotten all the people she loves in trouble. She had no idea that was going to happen.”

Marvel Studios released the latest trailer for Quantumania in January, which offered another look at Rudd’s reprisal of his MCU role as Scott Lang/Ant-Man. Not only that, but the trailer introduced Majors as the MCU’s newest supervillain, Kang the Conqueror, and provided a first look at the extent of his powers. While plot details for Quantumania remain scarce, the trailer showed that Scott and his family will find themselves forced to work with Kang to escape the Quantum Realm.

In a previous interview, director Peyton Reed explained that he sees the third Ant-Man movie as an Avengers-level story. “People felt like, ‘Oh, these are fun little palate cleansers after a gigantic Avengers movie,'” said Reed. “For this third one, I said, ‘I don’t want to be the palate cleanser anymore. I want to be the big Avengers movie.'” Reed also revealed in July that the third Ant-Man film will have major repercussions on the MCU and will be essential viewing going forward.
