Luffy undergoes Gear Four transformation in One Piece.

The One Piece fan base lost its mind when it was revealed Luffy’s devil fruit, the Rubber-Rubber Fruit, was actually a mythical Zoan. The World Government had changed the name of the Human-Human Fruit Model, Nika, to hide its true nature.

The Sun God Nika was mentioned only a dozen chapters before this revelation, when Who’s-Who told the story of the legendary warrior who would free slaves and bring smiles to people around the world. The Sun God, however, was first mentioned back in Skypeia, along with three other gods. Could they all have a fruit of their own?

Do Other One Piece Gods Have Devil Fruits?

One Piece's Nika the Sun God laughing with a hand over his face

When the Shandians sacrifice Kalgara’s daughter to try and stop the plague afflicting their tribe, they offer her to the god of the Sun, Rain, Earth and Forest. Mousse, the daughter, even remarks earlier on that she will meet the Sun God. Although it’s possible that this Sun God is different from Nika, the legendary warrior appears to wear clothing similar to the Shandians in his silhouette. The Shandians are a very traditional people, so praying to great warriors for help is something that would make sense in their culture.

Could the other gods also have devil fruits? Starting with the God of the Rain, there is already a fruit user that might have that model. Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy’s father, first appears in Chapter 100. During the events at Loguetown, a mysterious thunderstorm rolls into the town and strikes down Buggy as he’s about to kill Luffy. It’s possible this is just a stroke of fate, but later on, when Smoker has Luffy pinned, Dragon shows up and appears to send a blast of wind through the streets, blowing everyone away.

While it hasn’t been confirmed that he’s the one who did it, the timing of the wind and rain seems too convenient for it not to be him. If this was, that would give Dragon the ability to conjure and control rain and wind — powers that could easily fall under the umbrella of a Rain God devil fruit. The fruit could be another Zoan type, even a Human-Human fruit.

What about the other gods? The Earth and Forest seem pretty similar, but Earth in this case refers to landmasses. The tremor-tremor fruit, the former fruit of Whitebeard now in the hands of Blackbeard, has the ability to create earthquakes. This is considered the most destructive fruit in the world, and for good reason. The user of this fruit can split and shift the earth around them. It’s unknown what the upper limit of these powers is, but what if they could move entire continents? Perhaps the awakening of the fruit would allow the user to manipulate the earth itself — truly powers of the God of the Earth? This fruit could have also had its name changed retroactively by the World Government, just as Luffy’s fruit was.

As for the God of the Forest, this is a bit tricky. There has yet to be a power that manipulates trees or plants. Usopp is the closest person to having that ability, and even though his nickname is “God Usopp,” he is not a devil fruit user. A hypothetical Forest God fruit would allow the user to control the various flora of the biome they are in, perhaps even create whole forests even in barren deserts. The user would be similar to Poison Ivy and would be limited by their knowledge of plants. The more they know, the cleverer they could be in a fight by utilizing the various strengths of the flora. Luffy’s fruit being a mythical fruit based on a Sun God has opened the door for other god fruits to make an appearance, and these fruits could potentially become a huge factor in the story as One Piece heads into its endgame.
