Atletico Madrid have been charged with discriminatory behaviour in relation to the conduct of their supporters at Tuesday night’s Champions League match against Manchester City.

Supporters of the Spanish club were caught on camera appearing to perform Nazi salutes during the quarter-final first-leg tie at the Etihad Stadium.

UEFA announced on Friday that disciplinary proceedings had been instigated against Atletico. The club have been charged with discriminatory behaviour and with the throwing of objects.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will decide on the matter in due course.

City lead 1-0 heading into next week’s second leg in Madrid thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s 70th-minute go.

Speaking after his side’s 1-0 victory, De Bruyne said they could be happy with their win and go to Madrid next week full of confidence that they can get the job done and reach the semi-finals.

He told BT Sport: ‘They (Atletico) played with almost five at the back and with five in midfield. I recommend anyone that says anything [about us], that they try playing against that on the training ground.’

He continued: ‘We have to stay composed and don’t try to get into their action. It is the way they play. One nil is one nil. I expect similar over there. If the game is tight they will have to attack a little bit more.’

De Bruyne credited Phil Foden’s second half introduction with Manchester City eventually finding the key to unlock Atleti’s backline.

He said: ‘The first half was tight in the second half we had a couple of chances and it was good that we took one.

‘I made the run and Phil [Foden] found me perfectly, I needed to stay composed and luckily I did. It’s very hard.’
